Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Daniel B. Hier, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is a collection of authoritative reviews on cerebrovascular disease.
Purpose: This multiauthored selection of reviews seeks to update clinically active stroke specialists on advances in the field of stroke care.
Audience: It is aimed primarily at stroke specialists, but any clinician who cares for stroke patients including physiatrists, internists, vascular surgeons, and neurologists will find this book valuable and readable.
Features: The book is organized into 22 chapters, each an authoritative review. There are separate reviews on various stroke mechanisms including lacunar stroke, embolic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and arch disease. There are five excellent reviews on the underlying pathophysiology of stroke and atherosclerosis as well as four excellent reviews of neuroimaging including MRI, CT, and neurosonology. The books concludes with useful reviews of thrombolytic therapy, anticoagulant therapy, and surgical therapy for stroke.
Assessment: This is a brief but highly authoritative and comprehensive view of stroke care. It has been carefully edited, resulting in a consistent writing style throughout despite the collaboration of many authors. The diagrams and illustrations are clear and of very high quality. The book is visually pleasing and a pleasure to both read and scan. The references at the end of each chapter are authoritative and they have been carefully annotated to show references of "interest" or "high interest." This is a valuable addition to the field that every stroke care specialist can read with pleasure and interest.
