Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Jeffrey Richard Kovan, DO (Michigan State University)
Description: This is the second edition of insightful reviews of surgical orthopedics and primary care sports medicine relative to the injured athlete.
Purpose: Although not stated, this book provides in-depth reviews of surgical techniques and new trends in orthopedic care. Medical issues in sports medicine are also reviewed.
Audience: It is directed to orthopedic and primary care physicians active in sports medicine for the injured athlete. The editors and contributors are highly trained physicians active in the sports medicine community and offer very credible authority on the topics included.
Features: This is a beautifully illustrated text with surgical photographs, clearly detailed graphs and tables, as well as explicit radiographic reprints which help clarify and define the injury being described. References are current and comprehensive. Special attention is paid to recently published papers with special and outstanding interest in each referenced section. The overall appearance of the book is quite attractive and clearly an "eye-catcher" for the interested party.
Assessment: This review offers a unique approach to describing new trends in sports medicine. Incorporating orthopedic, medical, psychological, and medical-legal issues offers the reader a rather extensive and updated description of many common and rare occurrences seen in the field. This second edition reviews previous topics while incorporating new and useful information in a wide variety of areas. The selection of new contributors in many sections offers an alternative approach to common problems seen in sports medicine.

This book deals with surgical and medical issues in sports medicine. The purpose of this book is not stated, and the text lacks a preface. Although not stated, the book appears to be intended for orthopedists and nonsurgical specialists. Primary care sports medicine specialists will find this text most useful. Most of the authors are well-known and are credible authorities on the subjects they discuss. The book has a clean appearance, and the illustrations are of good quality. It includes great-looking color illustrations. This is a well-written book dealing with a variety of pertinent sports medicine issues. Excellent photographs and illustrations make this book easy to read. It is a good reference text.
