This book is part of the series Current Topics in Developmental Biology. It summarizes recent information on various developmental biology topics including pattern formation during early development, growth, and differentiation of the kidney and the role of calcium signaling at fertilization. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive survey of major issues at the forefront of modern developmental biology. Special emphasis is placed on mechanisms of development in a variety of model systems. This book is aimed at researchers in vertebrate and invertebrate developmental biology, in particular those interested in reproduction, morphogenesis and differentiation, signal transduction, kidney development, and voltagated ion channels in development. The different chapters have a nice balance of black-and-white photographs and illustrations. The reference section for most chapters includes recent references through 1997. This volume covers developmental topics such as the structure and function of the allantois, specification of the axis in early mouse development, pattern formation in the worm C. elegans, signal transduction during early development, formation of the eye fields in Drosophila, and apoptosis of neurons. All of the chapters are well done and will serve as good reviews of the topics. This volume is highly recommended for libraries.
