Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 6–9—The first title (Thomas Nelson, 2009) in Wayne Batson and Christopher Hopper's new fantasy series introduces the seven Elven Lords of Allyra, thought to have perished in the Siege of Berinfell. In reality, they were safely transported to Earth where they have been scattered around the globe and adopted by human parents. Now approaching their 13th birthday, each of them is about to come into his or her elfin powers—gifts that will be used to help them battle the minions of the evil Spider King in a desperate struggle to save their race from extinction. Aided by a series of sentinels (elves disguised as humans), they embark on a dangerous journey from Earth to another world where they will be both welcomed and hunted. Despite uneven writing and narration by Blaine Hogan and Greg Whalen that is not uniformly consistent or successful, the fast pace, non-stop action, humorous interactions, and unfolding of the personalities of the seven Elven Lords will keep listeners engaged and eager for the next installment.—Cindy Lombardo, Cleveland Public Library, OH

    Curse of the Spider King

Seven teens find themselves followed by mysterious people while gaining unbelievable powers. It doesn't take long for them to learn the Spider King's assassins are out to get them, and elves are out to protect them. Will they place their lives in God's hands and follow the elves back to their homeland.before it's too late?
Wayne Thomas Batson and Christopher Hopper are amazing together, and this book is an epic start for their co-authorship series; I couldn't set it down! :D Watch out for the cliffhanger! It almost killed me. -.-

    Curse of the Spider King

The spider king is on the hunt again. Searching for seven elven lords, lost to earth hundreds of years ago. But he has ears everywhere, and it seems they live, and are about to reach the age of reckoning. Read the book, and see what happens to 7 "normal" kids with abnormal abilities! Curse of the Spider king, masterful book by Wayne Batson, and Christopher Hopper. The second book in a series of five is coming out in June 2010!!!

Who wants to be an Elf?

Do you have scares on the top of your ears?
Did you get strange powers when you turned thirteen?
Are you morbidly afraid of spiders?
Then you could be an elf!
With the young Seven Elven lords stolen from their families as infants. They were taken to earth to be hidden till the 'Age of Reckoning'.
Now the Time has come. The worlds are open for good and for evil to enter. Will the children return or be killed. who will find them first? The Spider King and his minions or the last remits of Elves.
Curse of the Spider King will make all arachnophobias tremble, all hero's rise, all archers shoot better, in hopes that they are one of the 7.
Wayne Thomas Batson and Christopher Hopper make this a nail biting adventure. They did an excellent job creating a world 'Allyar'. That will have you wishing you could go there. They also did a wonderful job with the mixing of two time periods, thousands of years apart. The characters are extremely well rounded and will make you love them all even Mobius, the chief Drefid.

    AMAZZING!!!!!!!!

What a great book. That's what I thought after reading this. Mr. B and CH have seven (yes seven) different main characters. And somehow they each are characterized so well. That is extremely hard to do as an author. Well done!

The Beginning to my favorite fantasy series EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I first picked up this book early in fifth grade I was immediately immersed deep in the story. The plot is about seven adopted teens who find out they are not what they seem. The plot starts out slow; lots of suspense, of course, but little action. This may deter some people but Batson and Hopper managed to hold my attention. After about 100 pages, the plot speeds up a lot with plenty of action, revelation, and more suspense. It ends with a exciting climax, which will leave you wanting to read more.

One thing that some readers may also have trouble with is following all seven characters. Most probably will not, for Batson and Hopper did an excellent job of making the characters very distinct.

    Cons:

    * The large cast may confuse some readers
    * The plot starts out a little too slow for some people

    Pros:
    * Suspenseful and exiting Christ centered storyline
    * LOTS of action that will entertain readers throughout the book
    * EXTREME action packed climax and cliff hanger ending

Once again, Batson and Hopper have created a masterpiece of Christian literature that will leave readers gaping, anxiously awaiting to get the next book. Highly recommended even to secular readers!!!

This is an EPIC adventure for all!!

The time has come. The pieces are set and The Spider King has waited ever so patiently for this opportune moment. He strikes and the Allyran Elves have no clue the magnitude of force that has been unleashed. What will become of the elves? Is their race doomed to become nothing more than a footnote in the rewrite history at the hands of The Spider King? Or will there one shred of hope in the Berinfell Prophecies come to pass. This adventurous tale is co-written by Wayne Thomas Batson and Christopher Hopper. The Spider King is the first book of the Berinfell Prophecies and is full of great twists and turns, ups and downs, and leaves you wanting more! Authors Wayne Thomas Batson and Christopher Hopper trigger the imagination to enter a new world of heroism and horrific evil.

    Greatness!

This was actually the first book that I read by either Wayne Thomas Batson or Christopher Hopper, and it is one of the best. One of the things that was both good and bad was that there were seven protagonists. Seven. Quite a bit. But CH and WTB manage to pull it off masterfully. Mr. Batson's humor, seen often in his other books (like The Door Within), was also present. There was a particular paragraph about a cell phone (COTSK fans will know what I'm talking about) that literally made me laugh my head off. Mr. Hopper's description skills and other qualities shone through the pages of this excellent book as well. The character development could have been a bit better on a few select characters, but altogether, considering the enormous amount of characters, protagonists and other characters alike, the development was superb. The combination of these two authors was, to say the least, amazing.

    Curse of the Spider King

This book deserves 100+ stars. Even though there are many points of view in this book, it is an easy follow, and you also get to know what every character is feeling (there are seven main characters!).
The title of this book might scare you away: Curse of the *Spider King*. That was me too. I didn't want to read it because of the spiders. I was surprised when I finally read the book. There weren't very many spiders in it at all!
You may hear that this book is written for the youth, but this book is an attention grabber for anyone: children, young adults, adults. I would very highly recommend this book to anyone

    Curse of the Spider King

While a little confusing of a read the first time around (there are a lot of characters) I really enjoyed Curse of the Spider King, and while I was a little sorry not to get the Allyra until the very end I look forward to it's sequel: Venom and Song. The story really begin 800 years ago in the Elven land of Allyra, where the children of the seven elven lords are kidnapped and sent to Earth. Skip ahead about 11 or 12 earth years as the elven lords reach the age of reckoning, and age where their hidden gifts and powers start showing themselves. Elven sentinels sent to earth to find and bring back the young lords but they are not the only ones searching, Drefids, dangerous minions of the Spider King r are also looking for them in order to finish the job they did not dare to do before. As the elves try to return to Allyra they encounter more and more resistance until it finally reaches a climactic battle in Scotland where remains the last open portal.

    Spiders, Elves-- and more.

Seven young teenagers discover something about their past that changes their lives forever. They are all Elves, the Seven Elf Lords, to be precise. All the Sentinels work to bring them back to their real world, back to their real people. But the Spiderking, who first kidnapped them, is out to kill them. He and his Drefids did not kill them before in fear of a curse that would only be broken when they reached the age of reckoning when they were around thirteen. Then, their powers would mature and become strong. You will devour this book as you watch in your mind's eye the battles and struggles for justice and righteousness.

Curse of the spider king By: Wayne Thomas Batson and Christopher Hopper.

Allyra is the home to Elves who find themselves at war with the spider king; the Elves soon find themselves over powered by the sheer number of the spider kings army. The spider king captures the seven succeeding Elven lords, who at the time are only babies. The spider king orders that all seven children must be put to death, but he won't do it himself, as whoever harms the Elven Lords while they are children face a horrific curse. So he orders others to do it, but they also know of the curse and decide to hide the children on another world, that world is called Earth, and so as far as the spider king knows the children are dead. The Elven people also fear that the children are dead.
But after some time tremors are felt that come from Earth, the only reason for that would be that Elven people live among the people of Earth. Sentinels are sent to Earth to learn if there are any Elven people among the people of earth. But they are not alone on the mission, the spider king has sent his own people to Earth to see if they can locate the Elven people among us, and they have orders to hunt them down. The children all seven of them have reached the age of 13 and are near the age of Reckoning when their Elven gifts will be manifested.
Seven children that think that they are normal humans go about their everyday business, but one by one they start noticing things, things that seem impossible. Sentinels from the Elven world reveal themselves, and tell the children alarming secrets about their past. But the children also notice Dark strangers watching them. Will the Elven people get their Elf lords back to Allyra, or will the dark lord's scouts put an end to all the Elven people's hopes and dreams. Only the Elven lords can save Allyra, but will the children want to go home to Allyra, and save the Elven people.

The first thing that I love about this book is the cover, that lets any would be reader know that the book is set in another land or world, the bold writing on the front of the book stands out and is defiantly eye catching. When the reader first opens the book they are introduced to a list of principle cast that comes in hand throughout the book. The story itself is riveting, and the reader will find the book hard to put down. I found myself engrossed from the first pages, the story line is strong, and the interaction of the characters well written. The coming together of the two worlds is also written well. Character descriptions are easily digested by the reader. The book itself was a pure pleasure to read. The suspense keeps the reader intrigued, and the twist and turns add the icing to the cake. I recommend this book to any reader. I look forward to the next book.

Another Great Book From Batson and Hopper - Only This Time It's From Both of Them!

When finally I got my hands on this book, it was worth the wait. Just like the previous books by Wayne Thomas Batson and Christopher Hopper, it was filled with adventure, action, suspense, and page-turning plots. Fans of Batson and Hopper will not be disappointed by the authors' latest release; they will love the new characters, settings, and creatures. It was quite interesting seeing the styles of both authors combined.

The story had a unique twist; instead of humans from Earth traveling to another world, elves from another world travel to our planet, in search of seven unsuspecting thirteen-year-olds who hold the key to survival of the elven race. Evil forces are also on the hunt, in a race against time to kill the seven before the elves can reach them.

In the beginning of the book, I thought it was a little slow (only compared to Batson's previous novels!), but it didn't take long before I was hooked. The characters, who are seventh graders, might be easier for middle schoolers to relate to; but readers of all ages who are fans of Wayne Thomas Batson, Christopher Hopper, or fantasy in general will love the book. I also liked how God and Christianity seemed to play a bigger part in this novel than in some of the authors' previous books.

I especially recommend this book to librarians - as they are the heroes in this story! - and to people who say they don't like to read. Their opinion just may change after reading this!

    Cover to cover enjoyment

From the land of Allyra to planet Earth, "Curse of the Spider King" weaves the story of Elves, Dreadnaughts, Gwar, Drefids, the Spider King, and seven seemingly normal earth-bound kids. Hundreds of years have passed since the Spider King and his helpers drove the Elves underground. While the Elves think all of the lords, including their babies, are dead, a plot is hatched to send the seven baby lords to earth. Why would the Spider King's minions do that? What did they fear if not the King himself? Now that these seven are turning thirteen, they meet strange new people, some wanting to share information and history with them, many wishing to kill them. As their worlds are turned upside down, many questions arise. Who are the good guys? What are their hidden powers? Who will make it to Allyra? Are any other Elves still alive? These questions and more are answered within the pages of the book.

This story pulled me in from the beginning, making it difficult for me to put it down. I love a good fantasy novel, and this YA fantasy fits the bill. It not only introduced me to believable earthly characters, but to carefully crafted people and creatures from another world as well. Interwoven in the story was the history of the last battle which helps this reader understand what has happened, and what is being hoped for. I recommend this book to young adults, as well as others like me who love a good fantasy novel. I can't wait to start on Book 2 - "Venom and Song" - which is sitting here waiting for me. <grin>

I haven't read this book yet, but when I get a chance I am going to! I really like the idea of the book, and the concept, plot, etc.
Anything to do with Elven anything has my eye, anyone who likes Elven stuff, and/or fantasy stuff should read this book, and any book by Wayne Thomas Batson. Buy this book!

    It's grrrreat!

Curse of the Spider King was a terrific book! It is so intense that you have to keep reading, even though the spiders are pretty creepy. I loved that there were so many characters; it really allows you to pick a character you like best, or one that may be like you, and follow that person around. The story itself is very fun; I was good for nothing while I was reading it. It is so hard to put down! Though, after reading it, I admit, I was thinking there were spiders following me around for two days! I was sad once I finished the book. It just cannot stop there! I want to read book two!

    Amazing Book!!

Their human names are Jett Green, Tommy Bowman, Jimmy Greshem, Tommy Briarman, Autumn Briarman Kat Simonson and Kiri Lee Yuen.

They are truly the seven great elven lords, taken from their home reality of Allyra to earth by the Drefids, servants of the evil Spider King. The elven sentinels must save them, but the young lords must be found from among billions. They will be recognized by their powers: mind reading, control of fire, future seeing to name a few. The Drefids, however, have a presence on earth, too and the portals to Allyra are closing.

    Curse of the Spider King

In all honesty I found myself banging my head a few time while reading this book. I found it a hard to follow the beginning of the story with it jumping around to many different places and with so many main characters. Several of the main characters I didn't connect with, causing those short sections to seem uninteresting to me. But then several of the other characters caught my attention and drew me deep into the story.
The part where the kids touched the lettering on the Elf History books i really neat. It is exactly what happens readers (around the world, I'm sure) when they pick up a good book. I have experienced this with both author's previous books. It was not quite as strong a feeling with CotSK for me. But that could be partly due to me trying to stay distant from those spiders.
Over all this was a good book (I'm not just saying that, it's how I really feel), certainly not my favourite one to come from Mr. Batson and Mr. Hopper. They do leave you wondering when the bad guys are able to sneak one of their own into the Elven group. I'm sure that 'Venom and Song', the next book in the series, will be great and I am really looking forward to it.

    Good book!

Seven children, seven powers and they are the hope for Allira. The spider king has sent his men to earth to kill them. While going through the struggles of their newfound powers and the unbelievable fact that they are royal elves from a different world, they have to fight off the spider king's men. Will they get to the Elven world or will the Spider king's men get them first?
