Overview

Danny Dragonbreath and his best friend Wendell thought the hot dog from the school cafeteria looked a little . . . off. Then things got weird when the hot dog bit Wendell, and weirder still when Wendell started to sprout back hair. Could Wendell be morphing into a . . . (cue ominous music) were-wiener? All evidence points to yes. And unless he and Danny can get past the lunch ladies and slay the alpha-wurst, the whole school could be infected.

Written in Ursula Vernon's trademark hybrid style of comic-book panels and text, this is the thrilling third book in the series. In a starred review, Kirkus Reviews said Dragonbreath "will leave readers in stiches- and on tenterhooks waiting for the next one." Curse of the Were-Wiener will make kids everywhere laugh, shriek, and take a closer look at their lunches.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Patricia Williamson
Danny Dragonbreath is a back in another adventure from his imagination. He is a daydreaming dragon whose best friend Wendell sticks with him through thick and thin. Danny is always dreaming about some harried adventure in the seep dark reaches of the world. Suddenly, Danny's imagination comes real when Wendell is bitten by a hotdog at lunch one day. Larger than that, the whole school seems to be affected by the strange food. Danny has to call on his wits, keep his friend Wendell from turning and cure the whole school. What an adventure! We learn the curative effects of sewer water and the calming nature of a food fight as Danny quests to find relief from the curse. With rows of large sharp teeth and the hair growing on their reptile or amphibians body, they are all turning into "were-wieners." Danny and Wendell—in their true heroic style—rescue and restore order to the world of Herpitax-Phibbias School. Reviewer: Patricia Williamson
Kirkus Reviews

School lunch bites—literally—in the third impossibly droll escapade featuring dragonling Danny Dragonbreath and his peace-loving iguana buddy, Wendell. When Wendell and other students at Herpitax-Phibbias School For Reptiles and Amphibians are nipped by a strangely colored hot dog, Danny finds himself in a race against time to find and take out the Alpha-Wurst in a package of feral were-wieners before his friend and schoolmates are transformed into mindless minions. Dishing out most of the many punchlines and wisecracks in thick-lined red-and-green cartoons, Vernon crafts a mixed-format escapade that sends Danny and Wendell on a Journey through dark storm drains (cue a Joseph Campbell joke from Wendell; "Who?" asks Danny) to enlist the aid of an escaped sentient potato salad that likewise came out of the school kitchen—because "everybody knows that potato salad and hot dogs are ancient enemies"—and on to a gory (okay, ketchup-y) climax in the lunchroom fridge. What next? Would you believe....a Bat Monster? Stay tuned. (Graphic hybrid fantasy. 8-11)
