Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Jacka follows his urban fantasy debut, Fated, with an even more impressive tale of gunplay and spellcraft in present-day London. In a culture dominated by battle mages, Alex Verus’s best offense is a good defense: he can see all possible futures, and he aims straight at the ones where he doesn’t die. Both Light and Dark mages keep trying to hire him, but he just wants to run his magical trinket shop and teach his friend Luna how to manage her family curse. This dream is disrupted when a new friend of Luna’s claims he can destroy the curse with a dangerous wish-granting artifact, and Alex learns that some unhinged mages want to steal life energy from the dwindling population of magical creatures—including one of Alex’s few friends, the charming room-sized spider Arachne. Jacka keeps the emotional tension high with a series of wakeup calls for Alex regarding his relationship with Luna, his place in London’s magical social circles, and his image of himself. Readers will savor this tasty blend of magic, explosions, and moral complexity. Agent: Sophie Hicks, Ed Victor Literary Agency. (June)

Cursed is the second novel in the Alex Verus series and one I was really looking forward to. Alex Verus is such a great character to read about because he feels real in the sense that he's afraid of things and he's smart enough to try to stay out of danger, but at the same time he's not too afraid to jump in when he knows it's the right thing to do, and he doesn't let his fear drive his actions. He's a fast thinker and uses his ability to see into the future to maximum ability. This makes him a pretty great mage because of his fast thinking and being able to see what his actions will do makes his final decisions pretty perfect.

I think I liked this one even better than the first, but that's really no surprise. I'm now settled into this world and have a good idea of how things work and how Alex thinks as well as how his abilities work. Alex definitely shows us a bit more in this one as he struggles with a bit of a romance issue and we get to know more about his relationship with Luna.

This was a very fast read as it was easy to keep reading it. There wasn't anything confusing or overwhelming but it was pretty constant action with just enough downtime to compute everything that was going on.

If you haven't yet started this series I highly recommend you do so as you are certainly missing out!

Cursed is a great second book in the series following Fated. The characters made the storyline come through with added sidelines that are stories in themselves. I want to find out more about them. His sidekicks Luna and Starbreeze are back. I was glad to see that Arachne was also back in this book. Arachne's character intrigues me. This book ended too quickly for me and I need more.

    Enjoyable to a point

I really liked both if these books. Great characters, lots of magic and action and great plot. Another great factor is there is no stupid, angsty romance in these books which is a HUGE factor in my reading requirements. If I wanted that I would buy romance novels and I RUN from those books. The bad news-- I had already figured out the "bad guys" after the first few chapters and also pretty much knew what was going to happen and how it was going to happen. I truly love urban fantasy and I buy all I can find but I also enjoy the suspense and mystery of the story as well. My idea is that if I know who, what, where, when and how, then why should I finish reading it. I just go to the end, read the last few chapters and be done---all the enjoyment and excitement of the book is gone. I really, really want to read AND enjoy this author's future books however if the next book in the series proceeds along the same road as this one where I again have figured everthing out in the first few chapters then I will reluctantly take this author off my "must read" list and put on my "don't bother" list.

    A very promising series

"Fated", the first book in this series, attracted my attention enough to motivate me to pre-order this second book in the series. The books fall firmly into the category of "hard-boiled modern mage" novels, pioneered by the Harry Dresden series. These two books are sufficiently well-written and well-paced as to make it obvious that they are not the author's first outing. We get the benefit of his experience. This series is well-written, well-plotted, exciting, and FUN!
