Children's Literature
This spine-tingling collection of short stories range from ones that evoke traditional Brothers Grim deep-in-the-forest witch stories, to the most modern stories, involving curses available via internet shopping. In each, the author maintains classic story constructs such as “be careful what you wish for” and “if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.” Each story in this collection stands on its own, yet woven together they form a bewitching tapestry. My personal favorites are “The Witch’s Son,” which sounds as though it could be a traditional tale from the time of the American Revolution and “Past Sunset,” which reminded me of the cautionary tales my granny would tell to frighten the children from wandering too far from home or too deep into the woods. Modern or traditional, this collection is sure to become a classic for lovers of chilling tales. Reviewer: Louanne Jacobs
VOYA - Judith A. Sheriff
Spells are unpredictable and magic has consequences in this inventive collection of ten short stories, only three of which have been published previously. In the title story, an eighth-grade boy gets surprising results after he goes on-line to purchase a curse to get even with a girl who embarrassed him publicly. In other stories, a magic acorn allows a game warden to understand the speech of animals, charms used to steal a beau lead to tragedy, and witch hunters seek to eliminate all unauthorized miracles. Varying widely in both mood and setting, most of the stories twist and turn, with characters experiencing unexpected results from their involvement in magic. Some of the stories would make great read-alouds. An introduction reveals the author's difficulty in choosing titles, and an afterword details the origins of her ideas. The cover art is striking and eclectic, portraying a white-haired witch working at her computer while her black cat plays with the mouse. VOYA Codes: 4Q 3P M J (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses, Will appeal with pushing, Middle School-defined as grades 6 to 8 and Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9).

Combination of stories that teach different lessons like by trying to do bad things towards others bad things can happen to you, beauty is not just skin deep but that doesn't mean some people don't judge others based on appearance, don't loose touch with what's real, etc. I love at the end were the author does an afterward and explains the how/why each story was created.

This is one of those book that I'm afraid to read again . Not because it's scary or because it a horrible book but simply because it is so good that it captive my heart every time I read it . When I read the bood I feel all the emotion that the characters in the book feel . I have the feeling that I feel for them even more for they feel for themselve . It a really scary feeling since all the book end in a sad way that make me upset ( not at the author , mind you , it a good book , she really done a good job ) but at the story somehow I forgot it just a written-story but began to think of it as a real-life happen story . I love it .

I am actually a witch myself, and picked this book up because I thought it would be one of those dumb books..you know what I mean...But it was a wonderful book! I couldn't put it down, and was not disappointed when I finished reading this! I especially love the front cover!!!
