Editorial Reviews

KLIATT - George Galuschak
Rui has just transferred to a private boarding school in Tokyo. In order to escape her possessive fiance she decides to join a club, and the Cy Believers are formed. This fledgling club consists of four robots, three girls, a pair of computer geeks and Rui. Both computer geeks are suspiciously good-looking guys (they're supposed to be nerds): one wants to build a robot body and transfer his brain into it, while the other is haunted by 107 spirits. Natori Nijo, the aforementioned fiance (as per familial arrangement), wears a black armband and carries around a riding crop or a whip, depending on his mood. He is the head of the Public Safety Commission, and thus wields great power over the student body. Natori has plans for Rui: he wants to skip the boring engagement and ceremony and get right down to the wedding night. Cy Believers is a romance-comedy manga. The plot revolves around Rui's efforts to get away from Natori. The art is character-based, with lots of robots and good-looking, feminine guys. Some of the elements in this graphic novel may seem strange to the American reader, such as arranged marriages and the preponderance of clubs in the high school social scene. All of the characters in this manga are touchy-feely; Natori's advances on Rui are supposed to be funny but verge on assault. Cy Believers contains mild sexuality (groping and pawing) and is recommended for high school graphic novel collections where romance-comedy manga are popular. Reviewer: George Galuschak
