Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
The new "True" books from Scholastic use bright colors, large print, and sharp pictures of kids to attract attention to their subjects. Cyberbullying explores a serious problem that can have tragic results. Kids in middle school, with their intricate friendships and quivering emotions, are especially vulnerable. Raatma wants to make sure they understand that negative messages on blogs, in emails, and on social media can have serious consequences (Facebook bans users under 13); there is a scary page on teen suicides caused by cyberbullies. The author makes it clear that, unlike bullying at school, cyberbullying can strike anywhere, at any time, and warns that once a posting is made, it never leaves the Internet. How should victims respond? Raatma's advice: do not ignore a threat—take action! First, tell a trusted adult like a parent, grandparent, or perhaps a counselor at school. It is imperative to be supportive of friends who are suffering and let them know others care about them. A last chapter suggests ways to stop cyberbullying or, at least, help prevent it. Support from friends is important, but most of the other ideas will need cooperation from parents. Kids should learn why Mom and Dad make rules about using the Internet and ban some sites. Parents can encourage young texters to take time out to play with pets, go to a movie, or enjoy meals and games with their families. Starting a new hobby, especially sports like karate or tae kwan do, can rebuild destroyed confidence. Final words from the author: keep private information strictly private, do not succumb to the temptation of cyberbullying others, and remember to show respect to everyone (including yourself). Cyberbullying statistics and four listed books offer further perspective. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
