Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Finds in Medieval Latin manuscripts concerned with calendars much more knowledge and use of Hellenistic mathematics and natural sciences than has been recognized previously; and that the primary use for calendars, predicting Easter, was never accomplished very well, but that the stubborn attempts greatly advanced the knowledge of mathematics during the Middle Ages. The 11 papers, published in various journals between 1972 and 1993, discuss the works of Bede and Isidore, sidereal time in Anglo- Saxon England, the scribes and manuscripts of Fulda monastery where British and continental influences merged, and other topics. Distributed in the US by Ashgate. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
