VOYA, October 2014 (Vol. 37, No. 4) - Jonatha Basye
Did you know that the ski is even older than the wheel? Did you know that the first bicycle was invented in 1817? Or that surfing existed thousands of years ago and that some of the earliest surfers were Hawaiian kings? All of these interesting facts are part of the Science Behind Sports series. In each of twenty-two volumes, information is broken down into sections: origin, history, popularity, changes to the game, and recent controversies; the scientific principles that coincide with each sport; and health issues that can develop from participating in each sport. The books are filled with photographs, statistics, diagrams, lists, and charts. Even though a different author writes each volume, the books are consistent in style and length. Each contains a glossary of key terms, an annotated bibliography of age-appropriate books and websites, and an index. There are many resources listed for students if they wish to pursue the topic further. Tweens and teens will probably not pick these up for pleasure reading, but they will certainly be used for research, writing papers, and creating presentations. This series would be an excellent addition to any middle or high school library collection. (Science Behind Sports) Reviewer: Jonatha Basye; Ages 11 to 18.
