Overview

Based on true events and individuals, this compelling play outlines the life and love of Cyrano de Bergerac, a man whose talent with words rivals that of his talent with a sword. Sworn to protect a man who loves the woman that Cyrano pines after, he finds himself penning love letters to her on the other's behalf. As Christian and Roxane fall even more in love, Cyrano must stand by watching a life that could have been his.

JUNE 2022 - AudioFile

This is the year of Cyrano. Adaptations and films abound. But for the casual listener this straightforward staged reading (including scene titles and stage directions) might be the best introduction to the world of a tender poet and sly swordsman who happens to have a monstrous nose. Employing Shakespearean rhythms, original music, and clear American accents, classically trained narrators Steve Wojtas and Caitlin Cavannaugh, as Cyrano and the lovely Roxane, lead the listener through the well-known tale about a real-life seventeenth-century artist who wooed the love of his life by pretending to be another man. With a balance of humor, heightened language, and tragedy, this 1897 French play was an instant hit and continues to appeal to audiences to this day. B.P. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine
