About the Author

Jason Kelley is Professor of Medicine at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, Burlington, and Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit, Medical Center Hospital of \fermont, Burlington. He is the author or coauthor of more than 60 professional papers, reports, and abstracts that reflect his research interests in cytokines and pulmonary disease. Dr. Kelley is a member of the American Society for Cell Biology, the Biochemical Society, the American Thoracic Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, among other organizations. He received the A.B. degree (1966) in physics from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the M.D. degree (1972) from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas.

This is a state-of-the-art review of cytokines of the lung that is part of the continuing encyclopedia, Lung Biology in Health and Disease, volume 61. This is an up-to-date review of cytokines, providing a good starting point for the future. By the very nature of the book, it is outdated already, but it meets its objectives as a singular source for this basic information. It is unlikely to be useful as a text to be read cover-to-cover. Although aimed at scientists and physician-scientists who need a concise source book that is appropriate and authoritative, it will also be a reference source for the less-initiated who need specific information on cytokines. This book is more a reference source than a readable text. This book is illustrated in black-and-white, and the figures are of good quality but small quantity. More figures of cascade mechanisms might clarify cytokine interactions better. The text is referenced extensively, as an ""encyclopedia"" ought to be. By its natureit is slightly outdated; the latest reference found was from 1991. The book has an adequate general appearancein keeping with the appearance of the entire series. Well-written and well-referenced, this book achieves its goal as a review text. It contributes nicely to the series on lung biology. Its audience may be limited, but it will serve as an adequate reference source on cytokines for the experienced reader. It will be a difficult book for the uninitiated. Although not an essential part of an individual's library, medical libraries will find it a good addition to their collections.
