Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mary Hynes-Berry
Sleeping Bear Press is doing a nice job of producing alphabet books that create a sense of different cultures and countries. D is for Dala Horse goes from the Arctic Circle through Norway, Denmark and Sweden. Like others in the series, the book can be used on several levels. Some geographical or cultural element is described in a rhyming couplet and shown in a large illustration. However each page also has a side bar that gives more information in smaller type that an adult might use to talk through the picture with younger children, while older children may read and do further research. The books come with downloadable teacher's guides which provide some additional information as well as reproducible worksheets. While the series is clearly meant for a school market, families who want to convey their ethnic heritage will find these books a nice way to do so. Reviewer: Mary Hynes-Berry
