1996's Pies Descalzos was Shakira's big commercial breakthrough; it was that album that established the Colombian singer as a superstar in Latin America. But Shakira's next album, Dónde Están los Ladrones? which means "Where Are the Thieves?" in Spanish is arguably the finest and most essential album that she recorded in the 1990s. This superb CD isn't just Latin pop -- it's also rock en español. Dónde Están los Ladrones? inspired some reviewers to compare Shakira to Alanis Morissette, but that comparison is only valid up to a point. The Colombiana sings with a bit of a cackle something Morissette is known for on pop
ock jewels like "Si Te Vas" and "No Creo," but Shakira is a very different kind of lyricist. While Morissette is famous for being angrily introspective and having a mad-at-the-world outlook, Shakira's lyrics tend to be poetic and are, at times, unapologetically romantic -- even if Morissette sang in Spanish, it would be hard to imagine her coming up with something as poetic as the Middle Eastern fantasy that Shakira vividly describes on her Arabic-influenced mega-hit "Ojos Así." And, besides, Shakira already had a few albums under her belt when Morissette enjoyed her big commercial breakthrough with 1995's Jagged Little Pill. Of course, only those who have some knowledge of Spanish will be impressed by Shakira's lyrics; Columbia doesn't provide English translations. What will impress non-Spanish-speaking listeners are the CD's attractive melodies and the emotion that the artist brings to her songs; you don't have to speak a word of Spanish to find Dónde Están los Ladrones? musically exciting. If you're acquiring your first Shakira release, this would be the ideal choice.

My favorite from all of Shakira's albums...

I have purchased all of her albums that is Pies descalzos, Donde estan los ladrones, Laundry service and Fijacion oral and so far this is my favorite. I know Shakira's croosover to the American market is a great achievement, but if you are bilingual as myself purchase her music in Spanish. In my opinion much meaning is lost in her music when translated to English.

    Breathtaking!

I bought Shakira's international breakthrough "Laundry Service" a few years ago and I was somewhat disappointed, because I thought more of the Latin singer. I looked through the internet and found that her sophomore album "Dónde Están Los Ladrones?" had gotten great reviews, that this was supposed to be her biggest achievement. I thought, since Shakira's original language is Spanish, she must do better off singing in it. I got this record recently, and I was captured. It contains beautiful music, and although I don't understand any of the lyrics I can tell it's amazing thanks to Shakira's passionate and special voice. I didn't expect this of her, since she's now stuck in the commercial spotlight. So please, Shakira, go back to your former Latin rock style and give us more of this, I think you by now must have found those thieves...

    The New Queen of Rock!

I remeber seeing Shakira on the Spanish channels, but not purchasing her albums until much later. Don't make my mistake! This is one of the greatest albums BY ANY ARTIST OF ALL TIME! She stands out from the crowd of spanish pop singers who, while good in their own field of music, can't hold a candle to Shakira's greatness. A must-buy!

    The power of voice

To the first song, to the last, this album shows every corner of Shakira. To Balads, to Alternetive Rock, to pop, to a song with an Aribic backgrownd. Shakira shows her self in a mixture of ways. This Album is surely a treasure!

Shakira is a gift from God

Her voice is loaded with emotions, she has an excellent dance style, her songs contain many different sounds like Indian,Arabic,Latin,Rock,Turkish melodies. And this makes her special. I think she's better than Jennifer Lopez,Britney Spears and Mariah Carey. After Madonna, she'll be the #1 in the world. Her eyes are like a dream, but they're not unreal like dreams! They're real and sooo beautiful! I like all of her albums. Ojos Asi is the best song of the century. GO SHAKIRA GO!!!

    A soul that sings!

The only way to describe this album is to say that it is absolutely AMAZING. Good lyrics, good sounds, a mix of several cultures and instruments in every track, and an amazing voice that gives us a piece of her soul.

    Shakira, a rock diva...

Shakira is one of the most genuine artists I've had the opportunity to listen to in my whole life...She's singer, songwriter, and even producer...Her voice is neat, kinda jerky at times but still...Donde Estan Los Ladrones? is proof that she's a talented performer!

    Donde Estan los Ladrones?

I have about 200 CDs and Shakira's 3 CDs (Pies Descalzos, Donde estan los ladrones, and Shakira Unplugged) are the best ones I've ever purchased. These three albums are the only ones I've ever heard in which I absolutely love all the songs. The music is original, emotional and intelligent. Must buy for ANYONE.

The Latin world has another emerging artist unlike ricky martin whose whole purpose to sell sell sell came in and stoppe his good music well. Like selena shakira is one of the best examples og good latin music shakira will be adored by millions when her crossover album comes out this album is a small example of what shakira can do .

    I don't understand a word she's singing, but it's great!

I don't know a word of Spanish, but this cd is great. The music is good, her voice is good. I'm sure it would be cool if I knew what she was saying, but hey what the heck - if it sounds good, I'm listening! Another reviewer already said this and I agree - she's a cross between Alanis Morrissete and Natalie Merchant, with a little Sheryl Crow in there.

The Best CD Whether You Speak Spanish or Not

This CD will catch onto you even if you don't understand a word. Shakira's style is a cross between Alanis and Jewel. It's great to dance to or just to mellow out.
