Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Arthur the aardvark's delightfully annoying little sister, D.W. Read, gets into trouble and mischief and steals the show with her lust for life and proclivity for drama. She adds piquancy to an otherwise serene, normal household, and for that we are thankful. When D.W. is sent to her room for making little sister Kate cry, D.W. is offended by the injustice of it all. After all, Baby Kate had tried to knock down her beautiful castle of blocks. While exiled in her bedroom, D.W. first tries to finagle a way out of her room, and when that fails, she ponders her state of woe. Imagining herself as the Cinderella servant to her parents and big brother, she lounges on her bed sulking. D.W. continues her colorful ruminations until Baby Kate enters the room and, to make amends, offers D.W. her pacifier. Suddenly her punishment is over and the two sisters are enjoying each other's company. Any child with a little sibling will get a kick out of D.W.'s vivid imagination and will relate to the frustration of being punished for something that surely must have been somebody else's fault. 2001 (orig. 1999), Little Brown, $5.95.
