Barnes & Noble - Martin Johnson
Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott is a bitch, and you don't have to believe me -- she says it early and often on DA REAL WORLD. Elliott isn't angry or churlish, rather she's asserting her hard-won power and seeking to destigmatize one of the longer standing epithets toward powerful women. Elliott spent years behind the scenes -- with the R&B group Sista, writing and producing for SWV, Aaliyah, and Total, and doing cameos most notably with Gina Thompson -- before her debut, SUPA DUPA FLY established her and musical partner Timabaland as two of the most important hip-hop artists of the '90s. Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott is a bitch, and you don't have to believe me -- she says it early and often on DA REAL WORLD. Her followup DA REAL WORLD is your classic hip-hop block party with a star-studded guest list Outkast's Big Boi, Lil' Kim, Eminem, Lady Saw, Redman, Lil' Mo, but the recording is distinctively Missy's. There are no immediate "what was that" knockouts like "The Rain," but the gritty, elegant harmonies of "Crazy Feelings" and the driving uptempo beats of "She's a Bitch" stand out. Throughout the album, Timbaland's rhythmic patterns keep changing while always retaining their charm and distinction, as on the straightforward hip-hop of "Dangerous Mouths," the R&B-rap hybrid of "Stickin' Chickens," featuring Aaliyah and Da Brat, and the classic R&B ballad "Crazy Feelings," with Beyonce from Destiny's Child. On her first recording, Elliott entered the mainstream on her own terms; on the followup, she's getting comfortable with her range.
All Music Guide - Keith Farley
It's really not that difficult to hurdle the sophomore blues provided you're an excellent songwriter and performer, that you have the same, equally excellent producer behind the scenes who contributed to the first album, and most importantly, that you haven't tampered with the hit-making formula from the first. Thankfully, Da Real World is clearly a Missy Elliott album in most respects, with Timbaland's previously trademarked, futuristic-breakbeat production smarts laced throughout. The churchgoing Elliott has often remarked that she wishes she didn't need profanity to get attention, and the album accordingly includes satirical nods to other clichéd notions of hip-hop -- the single "She's a Bitch" is the best example, wherein Elliott reappropriates the insult to refer to strong females. She also takes on the cartoonish Eminem for "Bus a Rhyme," a track that turns out to be one of the best on the album. Da Brat and Aaliyah make repeat appearances, and Redman and OutKast's Big Boi also contribute to this excellent follow-up.

    Missy Is Da Bomb!

She had established herself as on of the hip-hop prima donnas with her debut release, and now she is coming back for more with DA REAL WORLD, marking her territory and showing that she is among the best in the business. An unbeatable combination of vocal talent, rap prowice, and lyrical expertise give this lady an advantage over the competition. However, less emphasis could have been placed upon the usage of profanity. Thank God there is a clean version to the album.
