PreS-Gr 1 --Picking raspberries, eating ice cream, and listening to the ocean are some of the simple pleasures of an island summer, but the highlight for one little girl is when the Friday commuter ferry arrives, reuniting families that have been separated during the work week. Known as the Daddies Boat because most of the passengers are men, the ferry nevertheless conveys working parents of both sexes. The idyllic, timeless charm of a childhood summer is captured through the matter-of-fact text and softly luminescent illustrations. The book's surprise ending will have children going back for a second look. Although the setting of the story may seem worlds away to many urban children, the sense of expectant anticipation is universal. --Anna DeWind, Milwaukee Public Library
