Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
It's a special day for a young narrator and his father—though Daddy takes a while to get in the spirit (being awoken at 4:15 a.m. to the sound of bouncing baseballs doesn't help). There are rules for Daddy Adventure Day: no reading the paper and no calling the office, either. But at the seaside baseball stadium where the boy attends his first game ever, Daddy happily tosses him in the air, explaining, "That's three runs for the white shirts!" After the game, they stop for ice cream sundaes, followed by snoozing on the couch at home. Ramá's smudgy artwork and Keane's kid's-eye view capture the palpable excitement of the occasion, making the dynamics of their relationship feel both distinctive and relatable. Ages 3–8. (Mar.)

An excited youngster is up very early for a day with his dad. They are going to his or her first baseball game. He/she is sure to remind tired dad that there is no calling work allowed on Daddy Adventure Day. And surely no one will notice the coffee spilled by accident on dad's pants. The stadium is impressive. It takes time to get used to it all. Singing the national anthem and cheering the team are fun. Adding to the thrill of the "great stuff" always acquired on a Daddy Adventure Day is the foul ball caught by a man ahead of our fan and presented to him/her. The day ends with a special dessert at a fancy restaurant. Mommy has to hear all about everything. As they watch scenes from the game on TV that night, it's just not as good as having been there. "You never forget a Daddy Adventure Day." The textured illustrations, combining watercolors and digital collage, design impressionistic narrative images to make efficient use of the vertical double pages to convey the emotions of father and child and the visual impact of the stadium crowds. The happy story is told through the eyes of the child, with humorous response from the adults. The fact that the sex of the child is unclear adds to the universality of the tale. PreS-Gr 1—A boy eagerly awaits a ball-game outing with his father. He wakes up in the wee hours of the morning and cheekily rolls his father's old baseballs down the stairs, commenting, "I don't know how he can sleep on such an exciting day." His father makes other changes to his daily routine: "'There's no reading the paper on a Daddy Adventure Day,' Mommy reminds him," and "calling work" is also against the rules. At the stadium, the boy is awestruck by the sights and sounds. From their vantage point, the "grass looks like a green checkerboard." The day includes lots of thrills, from catching a foul ball to sharing a banana split. Ramá's watercolor and digital collage illustrations capture the warm relationship between the wide-eyed boy and his ever-patient dad (who suffers through hot chocolate and root beer spills on his pants). A satisfying story about spending time with loved ones.—Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada
Kirkus Reviews
A young boy narrates a special time spent with his dad. Daddy Adventure Days have some rules: there's no reading the newspaper or calling work. There are perks, too: Surprises often happen, and the narrator "always get[s] a lot of great stuff." Today's Daddy Adventure Day is dedicated to going to the boy's first big-league baseball game. But things don't start out too well for dad: He is woken way too early by the thumping of a baseball rolling down the stairs, and he's grouchy about missing his paper and not being able to call the office. The contrast between the hyper-excited boy and the laid-back dad provides gentle humor. Ramá's saturated watercolors and collage skillfully depict the boy's many happy moments, such as his wide-eyed wonder as he gazes upon the "green checkerboard" field, his surprise at being given a caught foul ball and his utter contentment as he and his dad lay on the couch at the end of the eventful day. Keane's classic pairing of a father-son relationship and baseball will be best shared one-on-one. As a blueprint for father-son fun, it's not a bad one. (Picture book. 3-5)
