Strauss tells a wonderfully entertaining, funny and tender account of raising Ella and Sylvia that any sports enthusiast will appreciate. Any sons, daughters or parents with fond memories of youth sports will be moved and amused by Daddy's Little Goalie.

Robert Strauss is one of those natural born storytellers who can turn "hello" into an essay that is filled with funny anecdotes that will keep you laughing far after he's done. In this book about the trials and tribulations of watching his daughters -- Ella and Sylvia -- grow up and play sports, particularly basketball, the sport he loves most, Strauss is at his insightful, amusing and whimsical best.
As a sports writer for 19 years I can tell you that many "sports" books fail to connect with readers who can never really relate to the physical or mental abilities it takes to succeed at a high level. But this ain't one of those books. "Goalie" grabs at your heart right from the beginning and the stories Strauss tells about Ella, Sylvia, himself and his wife Sue are nothing if not poignant. If don't get a lump to your throat reading this book, you've never been the parent of a child playing sports, never reveled in their success, never felt the paranoia and anger and agony of watching them ride the bench, never dried their tears after a heartbreaking loss.
Get this book. Give it as a gift to your dad, or your uncle, or someone who has made a difference in your life. They'll love it and they'll love you all the more.
