Recently took a fabulous class with Crescent Dragonwagon at Central Market Cooking School in Dallas. That class centered on her new book, Passionate Vegetarian, but after seeing her I had to go out and get this one too since are family is entirely composed of soup-lovers. The food Dragonwagon served and taught at class (delectable, easy, unusual recipes), plus her her ultra-knowledgeable but very friendly and warn, non-intimadating style, made me at instant fan. And the new book was amazing. Big, full of ideas, exceptional. Though I'll be reading Passionate and using for a long time I decided to seek out this earlier title too and am glad I did so. Though not vegetarian, it is very veg-friendly (just right for an allmost-but-not-quite vegetarian family like mine). It offers many choices for the perfect meal: soup-salad-bread. Everything we've tried from either book has been beyond perfect, so full of flavor and color. We've cooked exclusively Dragonwagon for a week already. I can already tell the Chilled Corn Chowder in Soup & Bread will be a summer classic around here. I should add that due to our predilection for soup I have many soup cookbooks. This is is by far the best. Both books are like having Ms. Dragonwagon in the kitchen with you. And having just made sweet peppery blackberry vinaigrette and oven-roasted shiitake mushrooms with her in class, I'll say you couldn't have a better culinary companion. Between these two books, I'll be reading and cooking Dragonwagon-style, happily and enthusiastically, for the forseeable future.

I collect cookbooks - love 'em ... but really, gravitate towards the same few whenever I am looking for some new inspiration or an old stand-by...this is one that I go to again and again. Aside from great, easy to use recipes, the author is an incredibly entertaining writer. This cookbook has had me howling with laughter, leaving my family wondering about me ("You're reading a COOKBOOK?!?") Whether you are new to adventures in the kitchen, or have been head cook & bottle washer for a long time, this book is a must-have!
