Children's Literature - Children's LiteratureLoveable Daisy, the duckling with big feet, has her own line of board books. In this one, Daisy and her mother are off to see Granny. They walk--trip, trip, trip and swish through the grass until they reach the other end of the pond where Granny lives. Babies and toddlers will enjoy the sounds while on this simple little outing. The illustrations feature all of the animals in Simmons recognizable soft style. 2000, Little Brown, Ages 6 mo. to 2, $5.95. Reviewer: Marilyn CourtotChildren's Literature
School Library JournalPreS-In Coo!, the duckling visits with a bee, a caterpillar, a mouse, a frog, a cow, and some sheep before being reunited with her mother. Children will enjoy the repetition, and will love to chant the animal sounds. While Mama Duck says "Quack, quack," Daisy says, "Coo!" In Day Out, little duck and Mama Duck set off to see Granny. They go "Up and up Slippery Bank,/slip, slip, slop!-Down and under Weepy Willow,/trip, trip, trop!- [and] Through Long Grassy Meadow/swish, swish, swosh!" In both titles, the double-page oil paintings jump off the pages. Simmons's use of blues and greens is especially striking. Children will love this adorable, yellow duck.-Meghan R. Leonard S. MarcusA little duckling and her mom head off to Grandma's, and what a delicious racket they make along the way: "Swish, swish, swosh!/Splish, splash, splosh!" Sun-splashed, board-brush paintings illuminate the scenes.
