Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
``Sunup to sunset, stormy or calm,'' Daisy ferries her rowboat between the mainland and the island. No task is too small or too large for this untiring ``taxi'' driver. A fishbowl containing two guppies is transported with the same loving care as Mrs. West's potted palm; even a sofa is pulled across, with the help of a barge. Islanders young and old come to realize that this kindly lady and her boat are as reliable as the changing of the tides. ``And evenings after dinner''--well, Daisy engages in a quintessential ``busman's holiday.'' The slow-but-sure pace of island life is lovingly captured in Young's ( A Trip to Mars ) gentle story. Sewall's ( The Pilgrims of Plimoth ) buttery, opaque watercolor paintings provide perfect depictions of the ruddy faces of the island folk and the many faces of the sea and sky that Daisy labors between. Ages 3-6. (Mar.)

PreS-K-- Sunny colors and happy faces are the primary impressions one gets upon opening this satisfying picture book. As the simple one- or two-line text unfolds on each double-page spread, readers are treated to a glimpse of Daisy, who rows back and forth, back and forth, several times a day in her little boat from the mainland to the island to deliver all manner of things--favorite uncles, or furniture, or a giant stuffed bear, or guppies. Even in the worst of weather, the islanders know they can depend upon Daisy as surely as the ebb and flow of the tides. The primitive-style gouache paintings show the uncomplicated lifestyle of the islanders, their dependence upon each other, and the joy they share in seeing Daisy arrive each day. The borderless artwork flows as the water--from one page to the next, creating smooth continuity of story and picture throughout. Universal in its theme, with warmth as its hallmark, this will be a fine adjunct for the youngest in transportation study units--or simply as a soothing, harmonious read-aloud. Daisy delivers. --Mary Lou Budd, Milford South Elementary School, OH
