Overview

Part of the 8-book Tamora Pierce reissue for Fall 2006, this title in the Circle of Magic quartet features spellbinding new cover art. Coincides with the release of WILL OF THE EMPRESS in trade pb.

Four elements of power, four mages-in-training learning to control them. In Book 3 of the Circle of Magic Quartet, outcast Trader Daja and her friends journey from Winding Circle to the Gold Ridge Mountains, where drought threatens widespread famine. There, Daja creates an astonishing object: a living metal vine. A caravan of Traders covets the vine, and Daja's dealing with her former people reawaken a longing for familiar ways. Now Daja must choose--should she return to the Traders or remain with the Winding Circle folk who have become her family?

While at Gold Ridge castle to the north of Winding Circle, Daja and the three other mages-in-training who have become her friends develop their unique magical talents as they try to prevent a devastating forest fire from consuming everything in its path.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This is the third in Pierce's new fantasy quartet, which began with Sandry's Book. Four young friends are blessed and cursed with specific magical skills, which they must learn to manage for the betterment of their world. Daja has a way with fire. She uses this gift as a blacksmith, and at the story's start she finds herself mysteriously making a plant of living iron. How this creation helps Daja to overcome the blight of her young life-being an outcast from her trader clan-is the grist of the tale.
From The Critics
This third volume in the Circle of Magic quartet tells the story of Daja, who comes to live with her friends and fellow mages at the Winding Circle Temple. The sole survivor of a shipwreck, Daja is banished according to the Trader custom that her bad luck could affect others. Daja, Sandry, Tris, Briar, and their mentors journey to a land that has been struck by a terrible drought. When a caravan of Traders arrives, none of the Traders will acknowledge Daja-but because Tris has something they want, the Traders perform a ceremony so that one of them, a woman named Polyam, is able to speak with Daja. As Daja is befriended by Polyam, the rest of her friends continue to worry about the threat of fire in a valley that has not seen rain in three years. The villagers' own mage, who has managed to keep them safe so far, dies when the fires get out of control. With Daja and the band of Traders surrounded by flames and trapped in the forest, all of the Winding Circle friends-adults and children-combine their magic to force the fire underground toward a glacier. When the flames meet the ice, the result is an end to the drought, neatly tying up the strings of the story. Pierce continues to put forth fine works of fiction; Daja's story is the strongest book in the series, if a bit predictable. Most readers will be satisfied, although not surprised, when Daja is redeemed for saving the Traders during the fire and her banishment is lifted. With lots of action, drama and excitement, vibrant characters and fascinating detail, this is a sure winner. Pierce fans will be impatiently awaiting this volume. A SUSPENSFUL AND INNOVATIVE BOOK

Daja's Book is a satisfying installment to the series. When metal smith, Daja, accidentally creates a living iron vine, it becomes apparent that something must be done about the magic's of the four children bleeding into each other. That is not on Daja's mind, however, because the Traders that she's been exiled from because of her 'bad luck' have made her an offer for her magic vine. The children's magic is not top priority for many others, either because they are journeying through Gold Ridge Mountains, where a three year drought threatens the land. Finally the children's magic is brought to attention, and Sandry completes a complicated weaving that keeps their magic from bleeding together, while still allowing them to stay connected. When grassfires start, Daja knows she must help the Traders, even though they banished her, and even though they would still avoid her because of her 'bad luck.' Daja's Book is another acheivement for Tamora Pierce. The more she writes, the more readers crave her books. This book, too, has an intense and satisfying plot.

Daja's Book is a great book. It has magic, adventure, and has a foreign language in it. Ofcourse, I can't put a lot of books down because I am one of the biggest book worms ever.

Daja's Book (Circle of Magic Series #3)

I love Daja's book! You have to read it. They go North, and all of the four become better friends with each other and their teachers. They learn alot, and see lots of things up North, while trying to help a valley with no hope.
