Overview

With her beautiful lyric soprano voice and a glamorous stage presence to match, Kiri Te Kanawa is one of the key singers of her generation. She also practically put New Zealand on the operatic map, so it's only fitting that she's created a foundation to support young artists from her native land. This festive concert represented the project's launch, and -- just a week shy of Te Kanawa's 60th birthday -- revealed a voice still in command of the warm and lustrous quality that made it famous. Te Kanawa revisits signature roles, such as the Countess from The Marriage of Figaro, and luxuriates in soaring arias like "Depuis le jour" from Charpentier's Louise; other career touchstones, from Richard Strauss (the sumptuous "Morgen") to a traditional Maori song ("Hine e Hine"), are represented as well. The gala evening enlisted other New Zealand singers in supporting roles, joining Te Kanawa in popular ensembles including the "Flower Duet" from Delibes's Lakmé and a love duet from Puccini's La Bohème. Veteran Kiwi soprano Malvina Major is nearly an equal partner here, taking some of the more dramatic soprano repertoire (including arias from Tosca and Madama Butterfly) on her own. In fact, this is practically a one-disc "Opera's Greatest Hits" compilation -- and yes, there is a tenor on hand for "Nessun Dorma." The Enya song performed in homage to the New Zealand-filmed Lord of the Rings may seem a bit artistically dubious, but ultimately it's a treat to hear Te Kanawa sing just about anything. If the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation accomplishes half as much on behalf of music as the soprano herself has done, it will be a praiseworthy effort indeed.
