Even without her Super Bowl 2004 "wardrobe malfunction" a.k.a. Boobygate, Janet Jackson has proven to be one of pop music's most titillating performers -- from her coming-of-age breakout, Control, to 2001's oversexed All for You. And her eighth studio album, Damita Jo -- Jackson's middle name -- follows in the same libido-driven tradition. As the hip-hop-propelled title track surmises, Ms. Jackson is "sexy, quiet, shy, but down for a good time," and all those moods are reflected here. The disc captures Janet in love the melodic "Spending Time with You", in lust the self-explanatory "Moist", and enjoying leisure time at the club the frenetic, Britney Spears–reminiscent "All Nite Don't Stop." Although many of the 37-year-old singer's graying fans might be longing for more substantive revelations from the diva than a sneak peak at her ample bosom, diehard fans won't be disappointed as Jackson moans, purrs, and sings barely above a seductive whisper on the album's 22 polished tracks. What the album lacks in hearty lyrical content, her signature production duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis compensate for with a few age-appropriate tunes, including "R&B Junkie," which picks up where All for You's eponymous, Luther Vandross–sampled single left off by borrowing the beat of another old-school R&B jam, this time Evelyn Champagne King's disco classic "I'm in Love." To spice things up, hot producer-rapper Kanye West adds a welcome dose of new-school flavor with the Jay-Z–assisted "Strawberry Bounce" and the breezy "My Baby," Jackson's valentine to her fiancé, pint-sized producer Jermaine Dupri. With Damita Jo, Janet gives fans a glimpse into her everyday life, but her challenge for the next album is to reveal more and show less.

    more from this reviewer

    A very underrated CD!!

I really wish that this CD got a lot of props when it first came out. The songs on this album are great when you just want to dance around and let loose. My favorite is "R&B Junkie" which is a nod to the old school music.

    WOW JANET IS BACK!!!

It is so sad that Janet was crucified for her apparent "stunt" this year, and then blacklisted by the FCC (hypocrites!!!). If given the chance, this album would have been on the top of the charts without a doubt! Seriously, I have not taken this CD out of my player, I am so impressed with the production, as well as Janet's lyrics! It is hard to say what my favorite songs are because, I rarely, if ever, skip a track. It is one of those CD's that you can put on repeat for sure! Janet is truly an artist and "Damita Jo" definitely proves that. This album is worth EVERY SINGLE PENNY!!!!

Very good for an eighth cd

This cd reminds me of someting a person would release for there first time out. But Janet, she keeps re-inventing herself which makes her music sell. This cd is very good. I love the dance tracks on it. This cd will never bore you. Its a romantic but then a very up beat cd. which will keep you dancing out of your seats.

Damita Jo a fresh new Janet!

Put all the breast talk aside.... Miss Janet has a new album out! Damita Jo is an excellent album. The best pop/R&B album to come out in a long time. From classic Janet dance tracks to ballads, this album is sure to please fans new and old. Don't let the first single "Just a Little While" fool you. Damita Jo is straight R&B with a pop tinge. Catchy lyrics and beats galore!

    Buy It

This CD rocks. I like all of the tracks. I can listen to it all the way through without getting annoyed. A few of the songs have house beats that make you want to dance. My favorites are Damita Jo (although I wish it were longer), SloLove, R&B Junkie and I Want You. As far as Janet CD's go, this is not as good as Rhythm Nation, All for You or Janet... but it's still that high Janet quality. It's been nearly 20 years, but our girl still has it!!!!!!!

    Impressive

I've never been a die hard Janet fan. I enjoy her songs, but I have never bought a cd. Until now...I have without a doubt stolen my mother's "Damita Jo" cd and have no intentions of giving it back until she finally makes me! This cd was really good. I love the "Strawberry" song and beat--it's almost wild to hear her say such raunchy things with such a soft voice. The country song was a spring of versatility that I enjoyed. But I think my favorite song was when she called fellas out for talking about how they can do this and do that in the bedroom and not do a doggone thing. Her best line was when she talked about how it wasn't her back broken so it had to be somebody else's...I cracked up. The whole cd had some really impressive beats and the lyrics were always on point. I got stuck in traffic listening to this cd and although it made me reminisce on memories of guys I'd rather forget, it just shows me that the songs were powerful enough to play back. Plus, I really love the fact that she has that earring in her navel that says "JDs" on 106 & Park. I love to see happy couples. That's cool.

    Janet Jackson's Damita Jo

Well Janet Jackson realesed her new album Damita Jo. This album is more mellow and kick back. It is not like her previously realesed albums it is more sensual and has an erotic vibe to it. Janet is still going on strong. Listing to this album makes you fall in love again. I feel this album is great and you should go get yourself one and groove to the beat.

The girl is so deep and is one of the very BEST!!!!

This album is another creation by a person in this world who shares herself in the music. Not only is she an incredible dancer and entertainer, she really does have one of the better voices in the industry. People try and downplay her because she is soft-spoken and a Jackson, but if they would get over the prejudices and just look at her as an individual sharing the planet with them and then listen to her music I believe they would see how much effort she really puts into everything and how her music really is a positive thing! She is also an incredible humanitarian. She doesn't talk about all of the causes she supports and helps finance, but lets just say she isn't selfish!

DAMITA JO LETS HER FANS KNOW SHE'S IN A GOOD PLACE AGAIN!

If you have listened to a Janet song or cd, then you know she has always encouraged her fans and the rest of the world to think out of the box in regards to racism, bigotry, illiteracy, homophobia, domestic violence, sexuality and self-worth. But for the 1st time in Janet's remarkable 20 something plus years in the music industry, she is asking us to think outside of the box in regards to her with the lastest release DAMITA JO. There are 16 songs and 6 "Dunk-isms" on DAMITA JO. What is a "Dunk-ism"? Well, its a term I use to represent the dialogue and skits between songs. And what does "Dunk" mean? Well, you will just have to buy the cd to find out, hehe. Anway, there is something on this cd for everyone no matter where your musical taste falls. If you love R&B, then the songs 'Damita Jo', 'Sexhibition', 'My Baby' w/Kanye West and 'Like You Dont Love Me' are the grooves you'll be jammin' at your parties and in your cars. If you're a club head then mark your territory on the dance floor early, because once the djs start pumpin' anthems like 'All Nite', 'Strawberry Bounce', 'R&B Junkie' and 'Slo Love'...there wont be an empty spot on the floor. For those who like it slow and intimate then 'I Want You', 'Spending Time With You' and 'Island Life' will definitely set the mood. And for those of us with a freaky side, then nothing says it better than the songs 'Warmth' and 'Moist'. A word of warning, please dont play the last 2 songs I mentioned around your significant other unless you are REALLY serious about, um, well, you know. In conclusion, the songs on DAMITA JO will have you wanting to party, sing, dance, reminence and make love, but this time Janet is also asking us to look beyond her celebrity and just accept her for being Janet Damita Jo Jackson.

Janet’s Looking for Love and has found it—you will too with this album

Since February 1st, Janet Jackson's name has rarely appeared in the media without the two little words “super” and “bowl” weaved somewhere into the conversation. However, her new release, "Damita Jo", demands top billing here any commentary on sporting events will be left until later. The first interlude, "Looking for Love", set's the stage for the album. An introspective piece set against a placid dreamy backdrop Janet speaks to us: “We're vulnerable / We're sensitive / And we're complicated people, too / So many people, rolled into one / We contain so much / So much creativity / So much energy / So many contradictions / So much confusion / So much clarity / So many moments of faith and fear / So many different characters live within us / All looking for love.” With the album "All For You," Janet was looking for love; with "Damita Jo," she's found it. The title track, "Damita Jo", is a funky urban number which wastes no time letting you know Janet is back. Immediately making you yearn to get up and start driving to the nearest dance club, it's about the paradox of being in the limelight and people thinking they know you. During your travels, you'll discover "There's another side that I don't hide/But might never show/If you wanna get close/Baby you can't/'Til you get to know/Damita Jo". When you hear "Sexhibition," you know you've arrived at the club and it's time to hit the dance floor--this is the perfect song to take you there. Instead of taking us on an Escapade (circa Rhythm Nation), Janet takes us on a sexcapade. This track works of wonderful plays on words: sexploration, sexplosion, sexplanation, and, of course sexhibition. The listeners of the edited version get a tailored version of this track, minus all the sex wordplays. At two and a half minutes, the track is cut abruptly by Janet's statement, "Relax, it's just sex." This track is too short, and hopefully will be followed up with extended remixes and a hot dance video in the future. "Strawberry Bounce" chimes in next to keep you on the dance floor. Janet gives up the control she sought in the 80s and this time let’s herself lose control. Definitely a dance number, but when you listen closely, the lyrics are for dancing under the sheets. An infectious up-tempo number with a snappy rhythm combines pop with an urban flair to keep the body moving on the dance floor. You get lost in this groove with its clapping delirium and don't even pay much attention to the lyrics at first except for Janet's "la la la la" chorus and Jay-Z's sample. Once you've listened to the song a few times, you'll understand that this is one of the tracks that earns the album its explicit advisory label. This album has you dancing so hard that it's time to slow things down with the easy groove, "My Baby." Here, one of Janet's new influences is revealed--Kanye West. Kanye helped produce "Strawberry Bounce", but here he is front and center. As if we don't know it already, Kayne announces that Janet's back! Janet's vocal styling are interwoven with Kanye's rapping to reveal her anxiousness about entering a new relationship. "These butterflies, they never lie/Been through so much pain before and baby/I had to try/'Cause you're not like most guys/And I ain't ashamed to say that you're my baby". Her multi-layered vocals morph into a unique new instrument which demonstrates why producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis have been with her since she burst onto the scene with "Control." Next, we're off to "The Islands" where Janet describes her love for them. In "Spending Time With You", it's clear that we have left the dance floor behind us and have reached those islands, the sanctuary where she can leave the world behind to spend all her time with her baby. This soulful track is reminiscen

Damita Jo is Pure R&B. It's Janet at her BEST.

Damita Jo by Janet Jackson is her best CD since "Control". From the thumping title track "Damita Jo", hipnotic songs "Sexhibition" and "Strawberry Bounce" to old school "R&B Junkie" this CD has it all. Not to leave out the soulful ballads, "Spending My Time with You", "My Baby"/w Kanye West, "I Want You" and "Truly".
