Children's Literature - Deborah Palgon
The similarities and differences between a boy and his grandfather are told quite simply in this phonics-based story. Short vowel words accompanied by realistic photographs make this book, which is part of the "Real Kids Readers" series, an excellent early reader. An appendix explains phonics guidelines and provides useful tips to help parents aid their children in this early stage of reading.
Children's Literature - Jessy Deutsch
A Level One book in the "Real Kids Readers" phonics-based paperback series, lively photographs of a boy and his grandfather make the reading fun, and therefore the phonics lesson barely perceptible. With only one or two short sentences per page, the text is quite manageable for emerging readers, while the spunky photographs of the L.L. Bean-clad boy and grandfather will hold the attention of non-readers as well. Particularly in an era of multimedia, high energy visual presentations, this kind of book might be exactly what it will take to get basics like phonics across to our children. It is also a refreshing glimpse at a positive, loving, intergenerational relationship.
School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1Crisp full-color photos on white backgrounds illustrate these phonetics-based easy readers. In Dan and Dan, a white boy lovingly describes his relationship with his grandfather and namesake. My Pal Al features a black girl describing her favorite stuffed animal. Both books have large print, short words, and a text designed to reinforce vowel sounds and consonant blends. The rhyming narratives read well and carry readers through the books. An afterword explains the phonetic concepts to adults and gives advice on reading together. A welcome new series for the earliest readers.Lisa Smith, Lindenhurst Memorial Library, NY
