Overview

From the time he was a rookie, in 1983, Dan Marino was one of the National Football League's best quarterbacks. Known for his strong arm and quick release, Marino broke virtually every NFL passing record during his 17-year career with the Miami Dolphins. He established new marks for career passing yards (61,361); attempts (8,358); completions (4,967); and touchdown passes (420). Although these records have since been broken, Marino is still the leader in several statistical categories. He is the only quarterback in NFL history to pass for more than 5,000 yards in a season and holds the mark for most games with 400 or more yards passing (13). Despite his individual accomplishments, Marino never won a Super Bowl. Off the field, Marino has used his fame to benefit the Dan Marino Foundation. Established in 1992, the foundation has raised millions of dollars in support of medical research, treatment, and outreach programs for children with chronic illnesses and learning or developmental disabilities.

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Sulock
Through nine chapters this comprehensive biography covers the life of football superstar Dan Marino. The book opens by explaining what made this National Football League quarterback one of the greatest in football history. The following three chapters recount Marino's Pittsburgh childhood, his college career at the University of Pittsburgh, and his great transition into the pros as Rookie of the Year with the Miami Dolphins. Chapters five, six and seven describe Marino's 17-year career, including highlights of outstanding games, his success in overcoming injuries, and his decision to retire. The final two chapters look into Marino's family life, his current career (including his work as a sports broadcaster), his charitable foundation, and his induction into the NFL Hall of Fame. Extras include a statistics chart, a chronology, a detailed glossary explaining the football terms that are bolded throughout the text, a bibliography, and a list of books for further reading. Though the text might appear a bit lengthy for reluctant readers, the author's easy-to-read voice and an abundance of color and black-and-white photographs of Marino in action should help to engage this audience. As a whole, this text portrays a positive, encouraging story and is the children's book version of the popular TV show "NFL Films Presents." Part of the "Football Superstars" series.
