Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara Troisi
It is Saturday morning and Rock (Rochelle Hayes) jolts out of bed, hops on her bike and speeds to the dance studio anticipating a break in her young dance career. Miss Toni, the dance team coach promised that she will perform the most dynamic solo the teacher has ever choreographed. Decked out in an assigned ugly long flowing orange skirt with tiers of ruffles over leotards, Rochelle arrives to find National Junior Solo titlist Liberty already doing warm-ups at the barre. There will be no solo, but the two will compete in a duet—not together but each with cute Hayden Finley. Whichever team gives it more pizazz will perform at the Leaps and Bounds competition. Rochelle’s duet is “Inferno,” an unfamiliar Latin contemporary rhythms dance with salsas and paso doble while Liberty is assigned a contemporary lyrical number called ‘Love’s First Kiss.’ Rochelle is crushed! This title, the second in the “Dance Divas” series continues to share the aspirations of five eight to twelve-year-olds—Rochelle, Liberty, Scarlett, Bria, and Gracie who desire to bring the curtains up against rival dance groups. Although Rochelle is the main protagonist in this story, readers will readily make acquaintances with each dancer and their personalities as they delve into practices and competitions. Their instructor, parents, and individuals have huge aspirations to boost each dancer’s credibility and consequently issues are constantly arising. Some less-than desirable but typical aspects of dance competition appear including egos, feuds, jealousy, and rudeness. Author Sheryl Berk’s series opener Showtime! should be a first read, followed by Two to Tango, Let’s Rock and other titles to be released, Step It Up and On Pointe. A glossary of dance terms appears in the back and words are italicized in the text. Other recommended titles include “Dance Class” graphic novels by Beka, Ballet Shoes and Dancing Shoes by Noel Streatfeild and Whoopi Goldberg’s Sugar Plum Ballerinas. Reviewer: Barbara Troisi; Ages 8 to 12.
