Overview

Amulet Books is the home of Aidan Chambers, “one of young-adult literature’s greatest living writers.”*

“With profound respect for readers, Chambers again stretches the YA genre to its edges and beyond. . . . Ambitious, imperfect, challenging, and powerfully affecting.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

In this revelatory, groundbreaking novel, the love of sixteen-year-old Hal Robinson for self-confident Barry Gorman is revealed through Hal’s own observations, press clippings, and the scattered notes of a social worker. These various perspectives contribute to an extraordinarily sensitive portrait of the intensity of first love. The Horn Book writes, “The author is marvelously gifted at suggesting the ecstasy and insecurity that accompany new love—including its emotional and physical, social and spiritual aspects. A major strength of the book, the central conflict hinges not on the lovers being gay, but on their having two idiosyncratic and contradictory personalities.”

Hal's summer affair with Barry Goldman ends tragically when Hal discovers he is much more committed to the relationship than his friend.

    Still Chambers best book

I couldn't believe no-one had reviewed this book, so i'm writing something down here - altough my English is very shortcoming. This book has left an important effect on my life, as it taught me how to deal with my gay life. I've learned to deal with it the way Chambers did in this book: namely, not as a problem, or even, a topic. That's the terrific part of this book, which was very new for me in my adolescent years. Of course, this book has more merits than only this one, which would bearly be enough to call this a good book. It's well written, mingling the flash-back diary of a troubled young man with the reports of a social worker. Chambers is very gifted in discussing delicate issues (death, homosexuality) in a very playfull way. You don't have to be an adolescent any more to keep enjoying the comedy and tragedy of this book, ten years after my first reading of it, I return to it very often.
