Genre: LGBT Contemporary

Ed Maurer has bounced back, more or less, from the neck injury that permanently benched his semi-pro football career, but every time he turns around, dance instructor Laurie Parker is in his way. But when a bargain lands him as an assistant in Laurie's ballroom dancing class, everything changes.

As Laurie and Ed lose themselves in dance, their lives continue to spin around them: Ed's injury makes it clear he's nowhere near recovery, Laurie feels the pressure by friends and family to perform once more, and the community center that has become such an important part of both their worlds threatens to close. Alone, they haven't had the strength or spirit to face what life has hurled at them. But as the turns of their personal paths lead them time and again to one another, Ed and Laurie begin to think that if they dance this dance together, they might be able to succeed.

Loved how two opposites could be so right together!

This book took me by surprise. After seeing it on my recommendations list for a long time, I finally decided to read it, and I am glad that I did. Ed is a retired semi-pro football player, who was severely injured in a game. He is struggling to accept his injury and incorporate it into his life. He volunteers at a community center where he butts heads with Laurie, a retired dancer, who is a aerobic dance instructor there. Laurie has also given up something important in his life and is trying to build his life around that empty space. One of them finally decides to curb their frustrations and try a different approach with the other, and suddenly, both of their worlds are changed. The thing that really stood out for me was how Ed’s disability was handled, and I know what I am talking about because I had a similar injury. His frustrations, fears and pains were very realistically portrayed, showing his anger and sorrow at not being able to do the everyday things that he wanted to do. The process of mourning for what-could-have-been was handled so very well I couldn’t help but hurt for him at the same time I was cheering for him. Laurie was a delightful character to read. His caring and compassion for Ed really stood out, even when he had to struggle with his own losses and a mother who kept pushing for something Laurie was afraid to do. I loved how dance was able to help heal the parts in both characters than longed for something else. Both of them were both mourning in their own ways what they had lost in their lives, and I loved how both of them tried to help the other discover what was still in their lives and to push the other to grab for it with both hands.

    Wow

This is 4.5 stars. Such a good book. Liked that it wasn't all about sex, but when it was, it was hot. I loved the slow buildup, too. They really got to know each other and discover an attraction for one another and bond through dance. 700 pgs.

    A dancer and a football player......go figure!

This was my introduction to Heidi Cullinan, and I couldn't have had a better experience. Big, butch ex-football player, Ed, and short, all-muscle former dance star, Laurie, butt heads from the first time Laurie's aerobics class interrupts Ed's ongoing weight-training class. It's gotta be love and, sure enough, these two are soon the Nick and Nora of Minnesota's Twin Cities. Each chapter is titled by a tango dance step, and the reader is lead into a complex and exceedingly tender story of two opposite personalities meeting and sparking fire. I was a Cullinan convert from virtually the first page, and I haven't read a mediocre story by her since. You can't go wrong with Heidi.
