Dancehall Roots: The Birth of Ragga, Dancehall and Digital Reggae

All Music Guide - Rick Anderson
Producer Lloyd "Prince Jammy" James was probably the single most important figure on the Jamaican scene as reggae music passed from the roots era into the dancehall period. Wayne Smith's tremendously influential "Under Mi Sleng Teng" was recorded under Jammy's supervision, and other hits based on similarly configured electronic rhythms soon followed. This generous two-disc set is something of a warts-and-all overview of the producer's output during that period; like most good two-disc collections, it would have made an excellent single disc -- for every brilliant single by the likes of Cocoa Tea whose "You Must Unite" is an undeniable classic or the young Shabba Ranks "Get Up Stand Up and Rock", there's an embarrassment by such justly forgotten artists as Home T and Major Mackerel. Not all of the unknowns fall on their faces -- Pad Anthony's "Musical Sample" is a brilliant and tuneful piece of dancehall crooning laid across a jittery and delightfully cheesy synthesized rhythm -- but for the most part the highlights all come from predictable quarters: Admiral Tibett, Johnny Osbourne, Ninjaman, and, of course, Wayne Smith, whose "Under Mi Sleng Teng," appropriately enough, opens the program. Even with the filler, though, this is a valuable collection given the budget-line price. Recommended.
