Overview

This lush global groove album rides the pulse of an exotic, urbane brand of paganism. All pieces are composed and performed by Michael Breene, with Katlyn Breene and Abby Spinner adding vocals that could make even the Sirens sound dull by comparison. Vaguely Middle Eastern yet rooted in funky club beats, each track inhabits its own world. Some pieces seem to draw inspiration from Latin ensembles while another verges toward the territory of Tibetan overtone chanting, but all influences are filtered through the imaginations of these musicians to become something quite different. "Ondine" is accented with the fluid bloops of the udu drum, flowing lines of fretless bass, and an effervescence of sparkling high notes, while Katlyn's vocals float ethereally above. As with any Enya album, some intelligible lyrics are smoothly blended in, whether for conscious recognition or a more subliminal engagement. The themes here include natural spirits, the divinity of the elements, and mysticism, all charged with passion and sensuality. And while the beats can easily be tapped off at 4/4 time, the rhythmic undercurrents are spine-tinglingly sinuous. The Breene and Breene team can certainly weave spells, and it's easy to fall into a trance on Dancer of Twilight.
