Overview

Wil Wheaton—blogger, geek, and Star Trek: The Next Generation's Wesley Crusher—gives us five short-but-true tales of life in the so-called Space Age in Dancing Barefoot. With a true geek's unflinching honesty, Wil examines life, love, the web, and the absurdities of Hollywood in these compelling autobiographical narratives. Based on pieces first published in Wil's hugely popular blog, www.wilwheaton.net, the stories in Dancing Barefoot chronicle a teen TV star's journey to maturity and self-acceptance. Far from the usual celebrity tell-all, Dancing Barefoot is a vivid account of one man's version of that universal story, the search for self. If you've ever fallen in love, wondered what goes on behind the scenes at a Star Trek convention, or thought hard about the meaning of life, you'll find a kindred soul in the pages of Dancing Barefoot. In the process of uncovering his true geeky self, Wil Wheaton speaks to the inner geek in all of us.

The stories:

Houses in Motion - Memories fill the emptiness left within a childhood home, and saying goodbye brings them to life.

Ready Or Not Here I Come - A game of hide-n-seek with the kids works as a time machine, taking Wil on a tour of the hiding and seeking of years gone by.

Inferno - Two 15-year-olds pass in the night leaving behind pleasant memories and a perfumed Car Wars Deluxe Edition Box Set.

We Close Our Eyes - A few beautiful moments spent dancing in the rain.

The Saga of SpongeBob VegasPants - A story of love, hate, laughter and the acceptance of all things Trek.

Meet the Author

Wil Wheaton may be one of the most unusual celebrities of our time. Born into stardom with the movie "Stand By Me", and then growing up on television as Wesley Crusher on "Star Trek: The Next Generation", Wil was in the spotlight nearly his entire childhood. Instead of burning out as a child star, he left fame behind and became a computer specialist in what Hollywood might consider the middle of nowhere: Topeka, Kansas. Now, Wil considers himself "just a geek", and both Dancing Barefoot and the forthcoming biography Just a Geek are about his journey in rediscovering himself and coming to terms with what it means to be famous, or, ironically, famous for being previously famous.

    Engaging Style, Universal Themes

Dancing Barefoot contains five touching, autobiographic short stories by Wil Wheaton, author and actor. Four are very short and focus on the magic found in the everyday. The fifth is a longer journey through a Star Trek convention and the memories it invoked. It ranges from laugh-out-loud funny to surprisingly soul-baring. All of the stories share universal themes of love, family and finding yourself. The style is informal, emotional, and very real. You¿re left with the impression that Wheaton is someone you could hang out with and talk to about anything, and also someone that could make you laugh hard enough to snort beer out your nose. It¿s easy to finish this short collection in one gulp, and it will leave you wanting more. Luckily, there is more out there to keep you satisfied ¿ his web log gets updated frequently, and there¿s a new, longer book: Just a Geek.

    I Also Recommend:

    Trip Down Memory Lane

Having been drawn to this book through WWDN, the author's blog, this work is definitely worth the money to purchase. Sharing stories of growing up in the 70s and 80s, and life today, Dancing Barefoot hits home with the generation who just started using computers at a very basic level. Memories of pre-technology days as a child, life with today's technology children, and more are found throughout this work. Written as one listening to another tell stories, Wheaton draws the reader into a life of memories that could be anyone, but yet is his personal. Remembering a time of dancing barefoot, as the title and cover suggests, the volume of stories enticies, entertains, and evokes emotions and memories often forgotten. Whether a new reader of Wheaton's work or an avid follower of his blog, this work provides insights into an actor-turned-author/geek that should not be ignored.

    Very informal style

The author is better known to most as 'Wesley Crusher' from Star Trek - The Next Generation. This book is something a little different from the usual offerings by O'Reilly publisher. Wheaton has penned five short stories of his experiences. Very stream of consciousness, informal style that will appeal to some of you. Given the typical readership of O'Reilly books, it is a safe bet that the main draw of the stories is the behind the scenes glimpse of TNG and a look inside the mind of one of its stars. Be warned that the stories are indeed short and totally first person. A more substantive book by Wheaton at a later time might be welcomed.

    An Awesome Book

I grew up following Wil's career. I watched all of his movies and he is the reason I watched Star Trek: The Next Generation. I was so excited to hear that Wil was writing a book about events of his life. Events I never saw on screen. When the first edition of the book was released in the summer I was so excited. I purchased a signed copy & read it right away. I was touched by the stories. Wil has a nack for story telling. The 5 short stories in the book will really make you feel like you know him. You'll feel as though you were there with him, living these events. Wil captures the emotions he felt as if it were yesterday. There wasn't a story I didn't love & I cannot wait until Just A Geek is released.

    I really enjoyed this book.

I am a fan of Wil Wheaton's work on TNG and his blog, and am eagerly awaiting the publication of Just A Geek. This book is an ideal sneak preview -- five touching personal stories that provide a glimpse into some interesting moments in Wheaton's life. Wheaton is a very engaging writer; the reader feels as if an old friend is sharing anecdotes. I am a B&N store employee and have submitted this book as a staff recommendation.
