Film producer Don Hahn offers his own unorthodox, yet highly effective methods for reawakening the creative spirit. Blending personal and often hilarious ancedotes with prescriptive advice for rediscovering your creative self, Hahn explores the emotions that accompany creativity and discusses the importance of constructing a creative environment. Hahn describes the creative process in stages and lists the forces that drive creativity: balance, chaos, persistence, truth - plus chocolate and coffee. Best of all, he demonstrates how his theories can be put into practice, using his own highly successful career as an example.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Seems like anyone who gets paid for writing is qualified to write a "how-to" book encouraging wannabe writers. Here, Hahn, author of Disney's Animation Magic: A Behind the Scenes Look at How an Animated Film Is Made (Hyperion, 1996) and the producer of Disney blockbusters The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, adds his thoughts. Hahn tells us "if I can do it, you can too," and his chatty, anecdotal style is warmly encouraging. But this is motivational reading, not a practical guide for serious students. To develop or reawaken a creative spirit requires both a lifestyle that nurtures the imagination and a certain amount of passion and energy. Creative people are creative because of the interesting, unorthodox ways they lead their lives, not because of the promise of profit or celebrity. Humorous, but not a necessary purchase.--Denise S. Sticha, Seton Hill Coll., Greensburg, PA

Profound without hammering you over the head

This is probably my favorite book of all time. I discovered Dancing Corndogs in the Night while I was in high school and got hooked. Don Hahn, who was director of Disney's most popular movies of all time, Beauty and the Beast and the Lion King, really knows not only how to be creative himself, but how to explain creativity. He takes abstract concepts and puts them into simple terms for anyone to understand. I am not one to read books multiple times, especially if they are non-fiction, but I could not put the book down. He teaches everything from why we shouldn't stifle creativity by making it a competition to ways to spark your imagination when you're in a rut. The book is truly amazing and I think everyone should read it.
