Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
Kay Gardner and Mary Watkins are longtime veterans of the women's music movement, having found an instant musical camaraderie when they first improvised together on flute and piano in 1979. These tracks capture some of their live magic, recorded at two music festivals in 1999 with some additional studio work from 2000. Watkins demonstrates a striking facility at the keyboard, breezing through styles ranging from jazz, gospel, avant-garde, impressionist, and romantic to some plain old smart-aleck hijinks. "Sweet Thing" begins as a swaying gospel blues, with Gardner picking up the low down melody on flute and flying with it. Watkins begins "Caprice" with a smart, walking ...

"Sweet Thing" begins as a swaying gospel blues, with Gardner picking up the low down melody on flute and flying with it. Watkins begins "Caprice" with a smart, walking boogie bass as Gardner strikes up a cocky game of musical cat and mouse. The whole thing turns goofball when they get a giggle fit and start tossing snatches of classic themes at each other with abandon -- their audience clearly eats it up. The duo obviously have their chops together enough to throw in some avant-garde edges, as heard on the discordant "Dreamscape," but the real keepers here are the more rhapsodic pieces -- "Beloved" and "A Rose Remembered" -- which remind one of Brahms or Debussy. Truly moving, these gems make Dancing Souls a real heart-grabber.
