Overview

Father Samuel Whiting does not set out to be a hero. He doesn't want to save the world or even save the day. Instead, he simply exists, asleep in his own life, adrift in a loneliness of his own creation. And then the circus comes to town and his self-imposed isolation is shattered. As he gradually awakens to a world of possibility, he embarks on the hero's journey of discovery through the uncharted terrain of his own heart. His is a tale of insecurity and false hopes, of self-absorption and self-denial, of reaching out and falling short. It is a tale of struggling with integrity and striving for valor by someone who, if left to his own devices, would willingly remain an extra in his own life. Finally, blinded by self-delusion and at the brink of despair, a challenge to serve changes everything he believes about the true cost of love.

In Dancing with Gravity, Anene Tressler, an Emmy Award-winning writer, paints an unforgettable portrait of the grand and petty motivations of the human heart. Her poignant exploration of lost, unrecognized and courageous love will prompt you to consider your own journey toward purpose and fulfillment.

Editorial Reviews

David Carkeet
Anene Tressler has created a fascinating hero in Father Whiting, a study in self-absorption, self-doubt, and social clumsiness. Not the ideal priestly profile, but as I read this sad and funny novel, I cared deeply about his fate, especially when his heart leads him into uncharted emotional waters. The author, a gifted stylist with a keen eye for human frailty, charts the path of Whiting's confused longing with a sure hand. A lively, engaging read.
Fr. Craig T. Holway
One of the most remarkable descriptions of a priest's interior life as I have read. In short, Fr. Samuel Whiting haunts me. - Fr. Craig T. Holway, Associate Pastor, Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church

Powerful story about the inner struggles of a Catholic priest - recommended but tough to read at times

I am an avid reader and a practicing Catholic who has a great respect for the pristhood and those men who receive this call in life. That said, it is a challenging career choice to make as it requires one to live a celibate life given over to others. This novel does an excellent job of revealing the personal struggles of a Catholic priest who serves at a hospital, and how his lonely, autopilot life is rejuvinated and challenged when he is asked to minister to a local circus. It's a bittersweet awakening for Father Sam Whiting because while the circus brings new enthusiasm to his life, it causes him to discount his calling as a priest and his relationships with a priest friend battling cancer and his aged mother. It's tough to read at times, but vivid and very believable. You won't always like Father Sam Whiting for what he does and thinks. However, reading this book will likely give you a greater appreciation for the challenges and life of a Catholic priest. The tale is so vivid, I could definitely see this becoming a movie someday.
