Overview

Dancing with the Duke is a short prequel novella to the Landing a Lord series.

She’s loved him for years…
Charlotte Grant can’t remember a time when she didn’t love her best friend’s older brother.

He’s never noticed her …
The Duke of Clarington hadn’t spared a thought for his sister’s friend in years.

Their situations are about to be reversed…
It is the beginning of a new Season and Clarington intends to stay away from all the young ladies and eager mamas hoping to ensnare a duke. But that plan falls into tatters when his mother sponsors his sister’s friend and enlists him to dance with her at Almack’s. The beautiful vixen he meets that night bears little resemblance to the shy, gangly girl who used to follow him around. Now, instead of avoiding Charlotte, he finds himself frustrated when she seems to notice everyone but him.

BONUS: Includes the first chapter of Loving the Marquess.

Also Available from Suzanna Medeiros:

Loving the Marquess - The first full length novel in the Landing a Lord series.

Lady Hathaway's Indecent Proposal - The introductory novella to the Hathaway Heirs series.

    Just a sampler!

Story starts out ok but then abruptly ends. Find out it is a sampler. Go to see if the actual book is available and find out that it is not. Pretty much a waste of time!

    Decent Prequel

    3.5 Stars.

    Hero: 7/10
    Heroine: 2/10
    Sizzle: 7/10
    Romance: 5/10
    Humor: 0/10
    Secondary Characters: 1/10
    End: 5/10
    Pace: 10/10

This wasn't a bad little novella/prequel. I enjoyed the read well enough even if it is a bit predictable. The writing was good, despite a lot of typos. I understood what was meant. The pace was great, exactly what I was looking for in length and story progression. Although, the end was a bit too rushed for me. The characters didn't have much depth to them, but of the 2 leads, Alex was my favorite. Charlotte played too many games and lacked basic communication skills for my tastes.

I think this was a good lead into the Landing A Lord series. I look forward to reading the first book and seeing if it's a series I want to stick with. As for a recommendation, I say if you've never read this author before, this is a decent book to start with. I picked it up when it was free, and it was a quick read... I'm satisfied.

    Dumb, 85 pgs

A mere 85 pages is not a book, it is but a Reader's Digest version of a book.

Do not care for Regency heroines who act more like Hollywood tartlets.

    The hero was totally forgettable.

Another one star rating due to lack of zero star ratings.

Well written, but a little short. It left me wanting to know what happened. It suddenly ends, leaving open questions.

I love Regency Romances, and have read (or listened to) many, many in the past years. This one was true to form, very suitable for the genre. I admit I didn't read the end matter (introduction to the next book in the series)...but that doesn't change the fact that I'm interested in tracking down, buying, and reading it! This prequel did it's job.

This short novella worked on so very many levels:
~ The cover is RIGHT; this is *not* a sweet romance, a huge turning point is the significant sexual play between Alex and Charlotte. The cover let me know right away that I could not expect "sweet" standards.
~ Alex and Charlotte have known each other since they were children, and spent so much time in the same household, "Charlotte was an honorary family member." This allowed the very few pages to develop the romance, which was completely believable.
~ This short novella covers 2+ months. It's very understandable that time passes between key scenes. Suzanna Medeiros did a great job showing us only those key scenes. The pacing rocked!
~ The end had a fabulous, satisfying conclusion. The emotional trappings (for both of them!) at the end was so rewarding! While in only Charlotte's point-of-view, I could FEEL Alex's pain. Beautiful!
~ Ms. Medeiros presented this short work with an economy of words. I'm pleased the story was told without wordiness, without superfluous scenes or dialogue or 'telling' what happened. Very well crafted. Kudos, Ms. Medeiros!
~ Alex, the Duke, was so darn yummy! I couldn't help but love him. And I found Charlotte's affectations of a confident, self-assured woman to be incredibly endearing. Likeable characters I was rooting for from the very beginning.

A tidbit that caught me off guard:
~ Zero mention that THE catch of the season, the Duke (in question; Alex, of course) was courting and then commits to MISS Charlotte Grant. I fully expected her lack of a titled father would play a role in this story. After all, it's a given in the genre. I would've loved to have heard Alex's statement that (I'm paraphrasing) 'Dukes can do whatever they want' came earlier, or that he was completely unconcerned that her dowry was only 'adequate' and her father untitled. Maybe this 'blip' is just in my own somewhat tainted-by-fiction-and-several-other-Regency-writers understanding of the Rules of Society.

Highly recommended to fans of spicy Regency Romance. ~Kristin
