Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
Even very young children know how to puff a white dandelion flower and watch the seeds scatter into the wind. Kudlinski has given this common garden weed a whole book worth of loving research. The dandelion's growth, scientific classification, seeds, root system, leaves, flowers, and life cycle are all explored. The book is filled with photos and the photographer, Wexler, has done a wonderful job recording the intricate details of this pretty weed. The close up shots of the seed with its tiny points that grab the soil and his photograph of the cross-section of the dandelion's stem are both fascinating and artistic. This book is part of the "Early Bird Nature Books" series which currently includes books about cockroaches, red-eyed tree frogs, sea lions, slugs, white-tailed deer, horses, and dolphins.
School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-An up-close look at an often-maligned plant. Its life cycle and history are clearly explained and illuminated with labeled drawings and beautiful full-color photographs. "Each tuft of dandelion fluff has a tiny stem. A seed hangs from the end of this stem." And there it is, magnified and ready to fly. The titles of the six short chapters are not helpful and the list of botanical terms to look for is off-putting. A note to adults about using the material with children threatens to wring every possible use out of the book and take away the enjoyment of discovery. It includes an annoying list of questions to ask, suggestions for "Introducing the Index" and how to "Be a Vocabulary Detective," and unrelated metric activities. Focus on the basic text without its accoutrements and let children get to know this noble flower.-Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
