School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-This book is for readers who have gone through the "American Girl" series and are moving up to slightly longer stories. Sixth-grader Kit is a child of the Great Depression, and her family takes in boarders to help make ends meet. Kit gets an assignment at the local newspaper to write "fun, wholesome" stories and decides to focus on a friend's volunteer work as a zoo tour guide. Another friend, Will, is back from some hard times on the road and gets a job at the zoo. When the monkey house doors are found unlocked and food is missing from the boarding house, Will is blamed. In the end, Kit gets her story, saves Will's job, and thwarts the real criminals in the nick of time. The book concludes with factual information about the Cincinnati Zoo. The action is moderately paced, and there is ample description to bring the story to life. While Ernst does a fairly good job setting out the trail with Kit picking up the clues, the novel is unlikely to be a first choice among mystery fans. However, those who love "American Girl" will be clamoring for it.-Sharon R. Pearce, Chippewa Elementary School, Bensenville, IL Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Danger at the Zoo written by Kathleen Ernst is an American Girl mystery about Kit Kittredge, an American Girl historical character, growing up during the USA's Great Depression. Kit has recently gotten herself a summer job at the local newspaper, the Cincinatti Register, writing a children's column there. Kit is searching for a story for her column, and while she is looking for one, she stumbles upon an old friend, a hobo named Will. Will was looking for some work, and had decided to stop by at the Kittredges for a visit. However, Kit begs Will to stay and Kit's friend, Sterling, suggests an available job at the local zoo. Will decides to take the job, and he decides to stay at the Kittredges' boarding house for a while. However, after Will gets the job, strange things start to happen. Every morning, the zoo's manager finds the monkey house door open, and it is Will's duty to clean and check on the monkey house every night, before he goes home. The staff is starting to blame Will, and Will is afraid he might be fired from his new job so quickly. But Kit is determined to help her friend with help from Sterling and to find a good news story for her column. Kit starts to look for possible clues and track down suspects, and so does Sterling, while at the same time trying to help others. Things start to go missing from the Kittredges' house as well, and Kit is more determined than ever to find the real culprit or culprits. But Kit and Sterling start to find more twists and turns than answers, whhich make them work harder on the mystery, but the answer is something none of them ever expected, and something you won't expect either! Once again, American Girl is successful with another engaging book, just like the other books in the series. Kathleen ernst also succeeds, being able to portray true mystery and creative crime-solving, and for that, i think her book, no doubt, deserves five stars. I would recommend this book to any girl who loves American girl, Kit Kittredge, mystery, or the zoo! This will prove to be a mysterious, fn read for you!!!!!!
