Overview

The covert ops team from Blackthorne, Inc. is back with another adventure.

What do you do when your life turns upside down? Whatever it takes.

When Elizabeth Parker arrives in Deer Ridge with her eight-year-old son, she's constantly looking over her shoulder, afraid her husband won't believe she's dead, despite the new identity provided by the high-end firm of Blackthorne, Inc. Within hours of her arrival, a man shows up claiming he's there to hook up her gas line. When he keeps turning up, she's wary as to his motives. For Elizabeth, trust doesn't come easy. She'll never let her husband lay a hand on her son, no matter what, and if this man is working for her husband, she wants no part of him.

Mark Grinciewicz, Grinch to everyone who knows him, was Blackthorne, Incorporated's top pilot. When his ex-wife dies, he is left with custody of a five-year-old son he hardly knows, and everything changes. Determined to do what it takes to help his son adjust to a new life, Grinch finds himself tethered to the ground, unable to do what he loves—fly.

When he gets a call from Blackthorne, requesting that he take a simple assignment—teach a woman how to fit into the community under her new identity—he reluctantly accepts the task. Bad enough he's not supposed to let on he's aware of her identity, or that he's on her side. But what he doesn't know is that she has something her husband needs, and the man will do just about anything to get it back. Suddenly, everyone is a potential threat. Can Grinch break through her defenses and earn her trust in time to save her without endangering her son or his?

DANGER IN DEER RIDGE is part of the Blackthorne, Inc. series. It takes place chronologically after WHEN DANGER CALLS and WHERE DANGER HIDES, but is a stand alone. Book 2 in the series, WHERE DANGER HIDES, is currently available only in hard cover. DANGER IN DEER RIDGE was written exclusively for the digital market.

Meet the Author

Terry Odell was born in Los Angeles, moved to Florida, and now makes her home in Colorado. An avid reader (her parents tell everyone they had to move from their first home because she finished the local library), she always wanted to "fix" stories so the characters did what she wanted. Once she began writing, she found this wasn't always possible, as evidenced when the mystery she intended to write rapidly became a romance. When she thought about it, she realized that her favorite mysteries were series where she could follow the developing relationships of the protagonist—to the point where she'd read the book twice; once for the relationship and again to follow the crime and its solution. So, she started reading romance, and found there was a genre that included mystery themes as well as a relationship.

Although her genre is labeled "romantic suspense", Terry prefers to think of her books as "Mysteries With Relationships." You can find more about her at her website,

So Suspenseful I Had A Nightmare!

I enjoy reading before going to sleep each night. One evening, I started reading Danger In Deer Ridge, but it was so late I had to stop and get some sleep. Little did I know that the book would bring on a nightmare about people chasing me. Yes, that's what happened, but the next day I had to read more! The predicament of Elizabeth and her son drew me in. I could feel her mistrust and fear over what to some people would seem like ordinary occurrences. When you're on the run from a cruel relationship and have to be careful about every person you meet and everything you do, even the most common activities or words from people you meet can take on sinister overtones. The author did a good job of making me care for Elizabeth and her son. Being human and not perfect, she made some mistakes in judgment, which made her situation all the more precarious, yet at heart she was a good person with the best interests of her son at heart. I enjoyed the reverse Cinderella aspect, in which she went to great measures to downplay her looks so her identity would not be discovered. Of course, I, as the reader, knew she really looked terrific! Also, I very much liked Grinch, who did a good job of balancing his life as a father with his duties as protector for Elizabeth. The fact that she mistrusted him made his job that much more difficult. I highly recommend this book. Very likable characters, and enough suspense to keep you guessing, or, as in my case, to give you a nightmare. Morgan Mandel

    A terrific story

I have read several of Terry Odell's books and this one is by far my favorite.

The danger revolves around Elizabeth Parker and her son, Will, who have escaped an abusive relationship and are trying to establish new identities and new lives. That might have been easier had Elizabeth not taken something else when she ran from her home city to rural Colorado.

Enter Mark Grinciewicz, Grinch to his friends and associates atBlackthorne, Incorporated. Grinch's ex-wife and her husband recently died, so he now has custody of his five-year-old son, Dylan. He has not seen the boy since he was a baby and is ill-equipped to be be a father, but he is determined to do what it takes to help his son adjust to a new life. When he gets a call from Blackthorne, requesting that he take a simple assignment--teach a woman how to fit into the community under her new identity--he reluctantly accepts the task.

I enjoyed all the characters in this story, especially the two young boys and how they bonded. Grinch was one of the best romantic heroes, stumbling, far from perfect, yet charming and strong. It was a real pleasure to journey through the story with Elizabeth as she evolved from the scared, paranoid woman in the beginning, to the capable, self-assured and self-actualized woman at the end. She had to overcome a lot of distrust and fear in order to stand up to her husband and then make choices for the rest of her life. One of the nicest things about her transformation is that it came from her. She was not the victim, saved by the big strong hero.

Kudos to the author for that.

Terry O'Dell does it again with another of the Blackthorne Series. Like all his books, they are well written and keeps you moving right along with the story. No dull moments. Romance is light and mystery wants you to keep reading. Am waiting to see what he comes up next.
