Clearly a labour of love this novel keeps the reader, or this reader at least, involved from the very beginning. As the plot develops there are surprises, which I won't reveal, which take this out of the ordinary realm of romantic fiction. It takes a skilled writer to keep the reader interested for nearly 700 pages and, in my opinion, Charles Smith has managed this. At times the writing and characterisations remind me positively of Ian Fleming's. There is humour and titillation - but nothing so explicit to prevent your mother (wives being much more enlightened these days) or servants reading it. The pace of the story is maintained throughout as James Hanley and his companion progress on their odyssey.
