Publishers Weekly

Wells (Scandal's Daughter) sets bedrooms ablaze with more than candles in this sex-drenched tale set in 1817 London. Maxwell Brooke, a dangerous operative for the Home Office, has unexpectedly become a duke, thanks to an arson that killed the four heirs ahead of him. Determined to bring the suspected perpetrators to justice, he has jailed Reverend Stephen Holt, who may know their whereabouts. Outraged, Holt's sister, widowed Lady Kate Fairchild, threatens to publish a diary that could embarrass high figures in government unless her brother is freed. Although the scandals are real, she hasn't actually written the book yet, and the handwritten volume Max steals from her home contains only Kate's sexual fantasies. He kidnaps her (on the thinnest of pretexts) and begins to make her dreams come true, despite her blushes and his moral compunctions. The predictable mix of romance and intrigue nonetheless has sparks of genuine passion that will keep readers turning the pages. (Sept.)

    Intriguing and Romantic

Christine Wells is an expert in bringing her characters to life. Perhaps Kate doesn't have the most likeable and redeeming qualities but that gives many hope for the possibility of love and romance and isn't that what life is all about? At least that is what romance novels are about, hopes, dreams and possibilities. Maxwell Brooke is full of intrigue and a very fragmented individual except for his focus on the outcome of love for Kate. Though there are many complications, Christine has led the reader on a rollercoaster ride which keeps the fascination with the story till the end. I'm looking forward to reading her next book.

    more from this reviewer

A colorful story, written well, but not quite in the same class as "Scandal's Daughter."

A fire has destroyed Lyle castle along with all of the heirs - adults and children - present there for the reading of the will of the late duke. By default Maxwell Brooke, a very distant possibility to inherit become the Duke of Lyle. Horrified by all those lost lives and guilty at his rise in station as a result, Max is determined to root out the culprits. His skills as a clean-up man in the British Home Office are especially suited to do so. To this end, he winds up kidnapping the aloof and feisty widow, Lady Kate Fairchild in order to put pressure on her cleric brother to reveal the names of the arsonists. Love lurks between Max and Kate, and there's also a villain lurking behind the scenes. Secondary characters Louisa, Max's sister and the dangerous Marcus Jardine might show up in a future book.
Wells is a fresh new author to the field!

    Okay

I had trouble getting into this book. I was a good book but for some reason it just didn't catch my attention. The characters were good, but it just seemed so long.

    exciting Regency romantic suspense

In 1817 the fires devastated the Duke of Lyle family killing almost all of them and leading to Maxwell Brooke inheriting the title he never expected. He vows to find the arsonists who murdered his family. Clues lead him to Reverend Stephen Holt, who knows the identities of the arsonists, but refuses to reveal them he locks Holt up and decides to use the man¿s sister widow Lady Kate Fairchild as bait to make him talk that is after he learns why a stalker is in her garden. As a reaction to her loveless marriage, Kate kept a fantasy diary that highlighted her desires. Max assumes it contains scandalous information that will damage reputations so he steals it. When he reads it, he vows to pleasure Kate in every way she vividly described. However, an unknown adversary tries to harm Kate leading to a desperate Max kidnapping her to keep her safe and for him to show her reality beats fantasy when love is involved. --- This is an exciting Regency romantic suspense as Maxwell has two mysteries to solve that of who killed his family and why someone stalks the hostage he loves. The story line is action-packed yet filled with passionate romance as neither Max nor Kate welcome love. The dual detecting mysteries are entertaining and enhance a fine tale starring THE DANGEROUS DUKE and courageous Kate. --- Harriet Klausner
