This book is true to its title and the reader should be prepared to have any "warm fuzzy" images of Mary shattered by the real woman who accepted the awesome challenge and holy honor of being the mother of Jesus having little understanding at the time of her response to God's messenger what that decision would require of her. How she withstood the trials and triumphed with her son to the glory of God is powerfully explained and left me in a reverential state of surprise and awe. Elizabeth Johnson provides a carefully research and elegantly written prose that can lead the reading to prayerful reflection on this truly holy woman living an extraordinary mission for the sake of the human race by God's design. I cannot think of Mary any longer is the traditional, limiting view that keeps her comfortably aloof from the rest of us in painting and sculpture. This Mary is flesh and bone, joy and pain and knows God has a plan though she may not know the end of the story. But we do, so I highly recommend this book as a scripture study and reflection aimed at revealing the true Mary of the New Testament.
