Complex Characters with story that will keep you guessing

Unlike a simple romance, the characters in Dangerous Passage are not young and flighty. Widowed, with a teenage daughter, Detective North deals with her grief, teen angst, and a new relationship. These relationships make the story more complex and interesting, then the murder mystery becomes more than a simple murder mystery. The suspense level is low, but the mystery complexity is high enough to make up for it. The focus of the book is on a crime that is growing across the world, human trafficking. This book has a strong Christian aspect.

I recommend this book to lovers of good clean police mysteries, with a nice romance along side.

Dangerous Passage by Lisa Harris is definitely not a book of my usual taste. However, for just getting into the "crime-scene-investigation" genre, this was a super first pick for me to choose. As a fan of NBC's Castle, I realized it was sort of like being in the minds of Author Richard Castle and NYC Detective Kate Beckett--which I loved.

Lisa Harris has a pleasant writer-voice which is perfect for the reader's day-to-day figuring out of her two main characters. She's good at dropping details that readers take in along the way, and then near the end, are able to start piecing together.

I've not read many books in which the story begins after the hero and heroine have already somewhat begun a relationship together--but then again, I don't usually read that many contemporary-times based novels. I enjoyed "watching" the characters handle the hard things they had to deal with concerning their jobs while also getting to know one another in a way neither of them really expected.

I was given a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Do you like suspense novels? Clean romance? Then this is the book for you. This is my first time reading anything by Lisa Harris and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to read, and enjoy. From the very beginning of the book, I was hooked, and until the suspect was revealed, I was clueless.

Kudos to Ms. Harris. I look forward to more titles from her in the future.

I had already read Lisa Harris’ book, Fatal Exchange, in her Southern Crime series, and loved it, so when this book became available, I jumped at the chance to read it and was not disappointed! Once again, I enjoyed Ms. Harris’ method of weaving several plots together to draw the reader into the lives of her characters.

Avery North, a homicide detective, comes from a long line of family police officers. Her father is retired, but both her husband and brother have been killed in the line of duty. This makes Avery a determined “cop” seeking to put the “bad guys away”. In this story, she joins forces with the handsome medical examiner, Jackson Bryant, to solve the deaths of two Jane Does. They soon find themselves in the dangerous, criminal world of human trafficking.

This novel is filled with intrigue, tragedy, bone-chilling suspense, and a good dose of romance. Having worked with several police departments for many years, I was amazed at the great amount of research that went into the writing of this story. I highly recommend this book to both male and female readers. There’s something there for everyone.

Fatal Exchange is Book 2 in the Southern Crime series. It can definitely be read alone but is much better understood and appreciated if read as a series in order. This book deals with a school teacher who comes from a family of policeman. She has a student who is having family problems and has been coming to talk to her about them. The book deals with kidnapping, hostages, faith and trust. This book contains mystery, suspense, and romance. It deals with the life of being a teacher and law-enforcement agent in today's world. I can't wait to read the next in the series.I received this book from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.

Dangerous Passages features Atlanta homicide detective, Avery No

Dangerous Passages features Atlanta homicide detective, Avery North, a widowed mother of a pre-teen daughter. Avery juggles her responsibilities as a single parent as well as struggling to come to terms with the loss of both her husband and her brother during separate incidents. At the same time, she questions her ability to handle her new relationship with medical examiner Jackson Bryant. The hero of the story, Jackson is trying to find the murderer of her brother, while Avery herself has two Jane Does to investigate. The fact that both of these Asian girls have magnolia tattoos indicates a sinister crime ring.

While the book does have a strong element of romance, I enjoyed the gripping storyline with a number of sub-plots. The theme of human trafficking is horrific, and one we like to think of as happening in “far off foreign lands”. Yet the author brings to light that 27 million people around the world are trapped in some form of slavery. So not only is this a good story, it is an eye-opener we all need to read.

I also enjoyed the break from the usual scenario where the heroine initially dislikes the hero and the romance creeps in to the surprise of the heroine (but never the reader). The relationship between Jackson and Avery had already commenced by the start of the book, and was still continuing at the conclusion.

The book ends with a tantalizing glimpse of what I’m sure will appear in the next book, and I can’t wait for that to come out.
I encourage anyone that enjoys suspense books with a purpose to get this book. You will enjoy the read as well as the opportunity to Step Away from Ordinary! (Lisa’s well-earned tagline.)

Dangerous Passage deals with the horrendous activity of human trafficking. I love that it is set here in the U.S. because it is a very real problem that many still think is only abroad. The book grabbed me from the beginning and I only put it down at night when I was too tired to read any longer. Lisa Harris does a great job of describing the characters and what they are going through. It is an easy read, a little light on suspense once you know what the book is dealing with, but overall a great read

Lisa Harris in her new book "Dangerous Passage" Book One in the Southern Crimes series published by Revell Books takes us into the lives of Avery North and Jackson Bryant.

From the back cover: She's dedicated her life to ending violence. But has she moved too deep into a treacherous world?

When two Jane Does are killed on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia, detective and behavioral specialist Avery North discovers they share something in common-a magnolia tattoo on their shoulders. Suspecting a serial killer, Avery joins forces with medical examiner Jackson Bryant to solve the crimes and prevent another murder. As they venture deep into a sinister criminal world, Avery and Jackson are taken to the very edge of their abilities-and their hearts.

Dangerous Passage exposes a fully realized and frightening world where every layer peeled back reveals more challenges ahead. You'll be hooked from the start.

As soon as you say human trafficking to me the story takes on a new level of danger. Teenage girls are dying which is very close to home for Avery as she has a teenage daughter so she is even more determined to find this serial killer. It is this Magnolia tattoo that is their only clue. With "Dangerous Passage" Ms. Harris has given us a thriller that becomes more and more exciting until the last hundred pages which is an extremely wild ride. All I can say is imagine going on a roller coaster; the beginning of the ride is calm until you get to the top and experience that first drop then it is nothing but twists, turns, upside down loops until the ride ends. This is what Ms. Harris does to us as readers with this book. All of the characters are so well written you begin to think that you have known them all your life and you certainly want them to succeed. This is a fun read, it is a fast read, however I do not recommend starting this book late at night because it will cost you sleep as you will not want to put it down. Ms. Harris is an excellent writer and knows how to twist your nerve endings as she tightens the suspense.

From the first page, where Detective Avery North heads to the spa to relax after a busy working weekend to the last page I was pulled into a fast paced novel of intrigue, suspense and romance. Adrenaline racing type of fast paced, and I loved every minute. Avery (besides sharing the name of a favorite girl of mine) is dedicated, compassionate and very fervent in trying to find a balance between her family and her work to find justice. Jackson is equally determined to help. As we become more away of the horrible human trafficking going on, will we become complacent or more willing to at least consider the truth of it being there.
In this crazy world where we are constantly bombarded with demands how do we find a balance between what needs to be done and our sanity? Is there a balance and can I find it? Yes, I find it by carving out a few minutes here and there to be transported to someone else's hectic life. And Lisa does a great job of lifting me out of my humdrum daily chores to a place where I can become aware of the things others face on a regular basis.

This is my first time reading a book by Lisa Harris. I was not disappointed. Of course, I like the mystery suspense type books and this one was right up there. This is the first book in the Southern Crimes Series. It seemed to have slowed down in the middle some, but the story line still kept me hooked, up until the end.

I did feel like I was jumping into the middle of a book series in how the characters were developed, but I think it's just the way she writes. The characters' back stories do come out and the pieces start to make more sense the further along one reads.
I'm looking forward to reading the 2nd book in this series!

Detective Avery North’s heart for the abused runs deep beneath her professional police procedure. The reader senses not only her proficiency as a police officer, but her care for the victim—even those who cannot speak of their fears and suffering. The subtle romantic thread with handsome medical examiner Jackson Bryant adds to the novel’s pleasure. Together they hang onto a case, the murder of a young woman, valuing her life and attempting to prevent the deaths of others bearing a magnolia tattoo. Well-written, fast-paced, the novel addresses a very real threat in America today.

Oh wow! I read another of Lisa's books several years ago and was so excited when I found out she had a new book coming out this year. And let me tell you ... it was amazing!

Dangerous Passages features Atlanta dective, Avery North. She's a widowed mother raising a pre-teen daughter, in a new dating relationship with medical examiner Jackson Bryant, an anchor for her extended family, investigating her brother's death. And on top of all of that, she's trying to solve the murder cases of two Jane Does. This story becomes more and more complex. However, I never felt lost or confused. Instead, the author crafted an intricate story, adding layer upon layer to keep me guessing as to what would happen next. I realized early on that there was much more to these two murders than met the eye, but it wasn't until the very end that I fully understood everything. Definitely the mark of a great story-teller!

I also enjoyed that while this book is definitely a romantic suspense, the two are balanced well. I never felt that one outweighed the other or stole the show, so to speak. Of course, Jackson is definitely worthy of his status as the hero of this story and I loved how he "forced" Avery to let him take care of her sometimes. I also liked the unique fact that they were already somewhat involved prior to the book. It just made for an interesting twist, and it seemed that we got to see more of the development of their relationship—rather than just the beginning.

I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in this series! Highly recommend! [4.5 stars]
