Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
People often romanticize the past. Sitting in a comfortable chair, reading a good book, it can be all too easy to think back to, say, the Colonial era in American history and think how simple it would have been to live then. In reality, early colonists barely survived their arrival in the New World. A combination of the dangerous sea voyage, disease, starvation, and potential attack by native peoples all contributed to a shockingly high mortality rate. Likewise, heading west as part of American expansionism, living during the Great Depression, or existing in an age of warfare and terrorism all contribute to the reality that life can be dangerous. As part of the illustrated “Dangerous History” series, Dangerous Times deals with the true hazards that existed in certain historical epochs. In telling these stories author Chandler does a good job of presenting the jeopardy that people faced during specific eras. While Chandler paints a wide historical wall with a narrow narrative brush at times, he does offer readers some insights into just how dangerous certain stages in human history just might have been. In this way Dangerous Times serves the worthy purpose of peaking the reader’s interest in history and especially the action adventure or misadventure elements of it. Reviewer: Greg M. Gr 3–6—From gladiatorial games to BASE jumping, these books recount both historical and contemporary dangers. Each title covers at least eight topics, most in spreads with one page that has a few paragraphs that describe the danger and the other with a full-page photo or illustration. Text boxes provide additional anecdotes and facts. Brutal Games! is heavily weighted toward contemporary extreme sports, and all the books focus on fairly recent and mostly American history. Although there are some interesting tidbits (e.g., the American presidency rates as a historically dangerous job), these volumes offer neither exciting characters nor the gruesome details that so fascinate children, and they don't contain enough information about individual topics for reports.
