Children's Literature - Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger
This volume of the "In the Footsteps of Explorers" series traces the life of Daniel Boone, from his father's journey from England to America, through a series of exciting adventures, to his death and his ongoing legacy. The narrative is detailed, giving extensive background about world and national events. This gives a context for Boone's exploring and adventures. Young readers are invited to share in the experience through the inclusion of such extras as a recipe for beef jerky. Other text extras describe what it was like to live on the frontier, how travelers and settlers fought loneliness on the frontier, and what it was like to be a native or frontier woman. Boone's story is supported with detailed illustrations and short sections of supplemental text. Some of the illustrations serve as the literal background, which makes the text difficult to read. But for the most part, the pictures are a helpful piece of the story. The final pages consider the long-lasting impact of Boone's life, including a mention of the television series based on his life. In addition to the main text, the book includes a glossary and an index.
