Many of my fondest memories are tied to holidays. Most of those memories are woven into the food we enjoy during those special times of the year. I remember being taught how to prepare a Thanksgiving turkey for the first time (accidentally baking it with the bag of giblets inside the cavity!) and baking dozens of cookies from old family recipes with my sister and my mom to hand out to friends during Christmastime. I look forward to reuniting with family and friends at holiday gatherings and congregating around the table to enjoy wonderful food and conversation. I especially love time spent in the kitchen with everyone busily preparing their favorite holiday dishes and later laughing over a glass of wine while cleaning up the mess from the celebration. 

When you are forced to alter your diet drastically for the sake of your health, you may understandably fear that your fond memories and traditions will be lost along with the newly eliminated food groups. You may worry that you won’t be able to attend significant gatherings with your family or host a baby shower for a friend without feeling ostracized or, worse, hungry! There is also a deep sense of loss when you can no longer experience the joy that comes from lovingly preparing and serving food to the people you care about. Those fears were once very real to me and left me feeling hopeless. But I have since made it my mission, with my blog and with my books, to break the misconception that you have to live a life of deprivation and alienation when you adopt a new dietary lifestyle. 

My initial switch to a grain-free and Paleo diet came after spending many years battling for my life. I devoted months to seeing different specialists in an attempt to find out what was causing my symptoms and was told everything from “You’re a hypochondriac” to “You might have colon cancer.” After dozens of tests and many different doctors, I was ultimately diagnosed at the young age of twenty-two with ulcerative colitis, an incurable autoimmune disease that wrongfully attacks an otherwise healthy colon. I was devastated, and very lost. I was also newly married and had fairy-tale aspirations of having a beautiful family and of following in my mother’s and grandmother’s footsteps by hosting big parties year-round.

All of my doctors told me the same thing about my condition: diet did not cause it, diet cannot prevent it, and diet cannot cure it. So I accepted the myriad prescriptions and went on my way, only to have my symptoms worsen with burgeoning side effects. I spent years in and out of hospitals, incapacitated and on very high doses of medications. I was unable to be a mom to my infant son, and I took medical leave from my job. My sickness ruled my life until I discovered that dietary changes could, in fact, make my symptoms subside. I adopted a Paleo diet, which is based on the types of foods presumed to have been eaten by early humans, before the agricultural revolution changed the way much of what we consume is grown and processed. It consists chiefly of grass-fed or pasture-raised proteins, fish, vegetables, fruit, seeds, nuts, and healthy fats, and it excludes dairy, legumes, grain products, and processed food. Many people who follow this lifestyle see improved blood lipids, weight loss, and a reduction or elimination of the symptoms associated with autoimmune diseases. After overhauling my diet, I spent quite some time avoiding parties and was apprehensive about hosting my own for fear that my guests would not enjoy the type of food I had to prepare. I was embarrassed to be a dinner guest with special requests and would often eat before leaving the house, or wait to eat until late at night when we returned home. 

I will always remember my first Thanksgiving just weeks after switching to a Paleo diet. I longingly looked at other diners’ plates full of stuffing, mashed potatoes, and gravy; my plate had only turkey, salad, and a deflated, runny mashed cauliflower that I had brought for myself. Watching everyone enjoy all of the traditional pies and desserts after the meal was even more torturous. I debated between breaking my new “rules” or foregoing the special dishes I looked forward to year after year to preserve my health. I wondered if eating those foods, just this once, would affect me, but remembered from past experiences that it was not worth the risk. 

It was after that disappointing dinner that I set out to re-create all of my favorite celebratory dishes in an attempt to give myself and my readers the gift of food traditions and to banish deprivation during holidays and special occasions. I forced myself to remember what had brought me joy before my diagnosis, and consciously committed to going against the grain in order to revive that joy.

I hosted my own Thanksgiving dinner the following year and proudly served all of my newly created recipes. My family and friends loved how fresh the food tasted. They even admitted that they felt better after the meal than in years past and didn’t have the standard post-turkey fatigue. The next year, and every year after that, my guests arrived at my home for Thanksgiving bearing dishes cooked from my recipes. Although none of them had an autoimmune condition like I did, their love for me made them want to accommodate my diet. Beyond that, they continued to make my recipes for special events throughout the year and served them in place of the standard American classics. 

Try a recipe: 
Green Bean Casserole with Crispy Shallots

1 cup (about 150g) whole raw cashews
2 tablespoons ghee or extra-virgin olive oil
8 ounces cremini mushrooms, halved
1 shallot, peeled and chopped
1 clove garlic, crushed
2 tablespoons sherry (optional)
1 cup water
1 3⁄4 cups chicken stock
1 1⁄2 teaspoons fine sea salt
1⁄2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1  teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
2 pounds haricots verts (thin green beans), ends trimmed
1⁄2 cup palm shortening, bacon fat, or ghee, for frying
2 shallots, peeled and thinly sliced into rings

Place the cashews in a bowl and cover them with boiling water. Soak for 1 hour.
Meanwhile, heat the ghee in a skillet over medium heat. Add the mushrooms, shallot, and garlic and sauté for 10 minutes, or until the mushrooms and shallot have softened. Pour in the sherry and simmer for 5 minutes to reduce the liquid.
Drain and rinse the cashews, transfer them to a blender, add the water, and blend until very smooth.
Add the mushroom mix, half of the stock, and the salt, pepper, and thyme to the blender and pulse a few times until the mushrooms are bite size. Pour the mixture into a bowl and stir in the remaining stock. Set aside to cool for 15 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Combine the mushroom mixture with the haricots verts and spoon into  a casserole dish. Bake, covered, for 30 minutes, until the beans are tender and the sauce is bubbling. Uncover and bake for 15 minutes more.
Meanwhile, to make the topping, heat the palm shortening in a small, deep saucepan over medium-high heat. Working in batches, panfry the shallots for about 5 minutes, until golden brown. Drain and cool in a single layer on a plate lined with paper towels.
Top the casserole with the crispy shallots and serve warm.

Gluten and dairy free recipes are often hard for me to find, but this book is perfect for that! It has vivid color pics of the dishes with easy to follow recipes that make my mouth water just reading them. The book opens to lay flat on the counter so it is easy to follow the recipe without having to find a way to prop the book open. Now I want all of her cookbooks!

f you follow the Pale and/or a gluten free diet, whether due to celiac disease, like myself, or allergies etc, this is a great book for you. It focuses on the year round celebrations that those of us with dietary restrictions either love or dread. Her ingredients are fresh, and her prep suggestions, tidbits of information, make ahead ideas, and presentation, makes you want to run to your kitchen to start doing the recipes. And let’s not overlook the gorgeous pictures found throughout the book. I was specially grateful for her recipe with Tostones. Having been born and raised in Puerto Rico, they brought back fond memories and a reminder that our foods can still be enjoyed by all. The only objection is that some of the recipes can be time consuming and you will definitely not have all the ingredients readily available in your pantry. So planning ahead is of outmost importance. I received a copy of this book from Netgalley for an honest review. The opinions are solely my own.

For the past 2 years or so my husband and I have been eating mostly gluten/grain free. We just feel better eliminating gluten from our diets. Eliminating gluten/grains from our lives meant going in search of new recipes. I first checked out Danielle's first book "Against All Grain" from the public library. I loved it so much that I returned the library book and purchased my own copy. When her second book came out, "Meals Made Simple", I immediately bought it as well. Her recipes are easy to follow and tasty! Now she has released her third book, "Celebrations" which is full of amazing recipes to share with your family and friends on holidays and special occasions. The best thing about all these recipes, besides being easy to make and tasty, is that EVERYONE loves the way the food tastes! You don't have to label it gluten free, because everyone will want to eat it ALL! So far I have made the following recipes from the new book: -Cauliflower Buffalo Bites (Page 54) - Great alternative to buffalo chicken wings -Green Chile Chicken Soup (Page 58) - Starting to feel like fall in Colorado, made this 2 nights ago, it is ALL GONE. Everyone LOVED it! -Knife and Fork Pork Ribs (Page 124) - Made these for Labor Day. Super easy to make and were a big hit. -Skillet "Corn" Bread (Page 131) - The corn is in quotes because there is no corn in the recipe. This bread is delicious! Goes with everything. Tastes like dessert! You will not be sorry when you take this out of the oven! -Peach Cobbler (Page 132) - Who doesn't love a good peach cobbler, and this one is gluten free. (no one will know the difference!) -Heirloom Tomato, Watermelon and Basil Salad (Page 168) - This salad screams summer, it is light and tasty. Perfect side dish for any BBQ! - Ginger Ale (Page 181) - Who knew you could make your own gingerale so easily? I sure didn't, but now that I do, I'll be making it all the time! Love ginger, so this was right up my alley! - Deviled Eggs, Four Ways (Page 187) - I only made them one way, with the Pesto Filling! I've made these twice now and everytime they disappear. I was hoping for a leftover to put in my lunchbox, guess I'd better make 2 dozen next time! -Herb Ranch Dressing (Page 326) - I made this to dip the buffalo cauliflower bites in. It was so good and I made a big batch, so served it up with cut up veggies. Every veggie was eaten and the dip bowl was wiped clean! I cannot say enough about Danielle and her books. They will literally change your life. You'll feel better and your family and friends will love you for it! Treat yourself to all three, I promise you will not regret it!

I have been gluten free for four years, grain free for two, and paleo for just over a year, because of food allergies and thyroid issues. I have always been in charge of holiday meals for a large number of family (just this Labor Day we had 17!). In the past it has been a struggle to find foods that were safe for me and my girls, while making sure our extended family had comfort foods that they would enjoy. We would scour the internet and test a bunch of recipes, and usually came back to Danielle Walker's recipes from her previous books. When Celebrations came out, I was quick to jump on a pre-release trial! I have already made a bunch of the recipes, and I can say with confidence that every recipe we've tried has been delicious, and not terribly difficult to make. If you are not used to cooking with paleo-friendly ingredients, it may seem a little foreign at first, but trust the recipes, they work! I am looking forward to each of the coming holidays, knowing that I have a selection of items, from appetizers to entrees to desserts, for each and every holiday. And not only are they holiday friendly, they make great every day meals, too! I have never been disappointed by anything Danielle Walker has created, whether it be her books, her newsletters, or her Cookery app. This cookbook is absolutely beautiful, and I'm a sucker for cookbooks that have pictures of every recipe. It makes meal planning so much more fun! I have eaten gluten-free (and mostly paleo) for 3+ years now, and while my family doesn't eat this way 100% of the time, all of our family meals are gluten-free, and it's really important to me that my husband enjoy them as well since he's more of a foodie. We also entertain frequently, and I love to have delicious yet not overly complicated meals and treats to serve to our guests. There are several recipes I have already made (watermelon, basil, tomato salad, peach cobbler, "corn bread", pancakes) and sooooo many more that I'm dying to try. The recipes aren't necessarily complicated just because they are meant for celebrations. Many are easy enough to whip up on a weeknight. I love that Danielle uses familiar paleo pantry staples for so many of her recipes, which makes whipping them up at the last minute possible. Her cookbooks are always the first ones I look through when I'm wanting to try out a new recipe, and this one will be no exception! I think the best part about this book in particular is that it is filled with recipes that I know even my friends and family who don't eat a gluten-free diet will still enjoy. this will be a most incredible menu for 125 recipes along with the nice beautiful photography full of color. All the recipes that can be make and share love and fun whatever how you feel like to do or cooking with the family, friend or everybody. This book will be fits for all kinds of celebrations all years long.

The Celebration Cookbook is amazing. The recipes are so varied and easy to make especially with her extra tips. Even though the recipes are listed under a holiday these recipes can be used every day. The book is very organized, beautiful photos, and something for everyone. I want to make every recipe in this book....I will enjoy working my way through this book. It's nice to eat healthy and have so many wonderful flavorful choices. I have made the salmon, heirloom tomato salad and the incredible cornbread. The recipes were not difficult to make and were delicious. My non Paleo husband loved the recipes also.. An added advantage is that the book lies flat while you are working with it. This book will not leave my countertop. Thank you so much for writing this book and helping us eat healthy.

Danielle Walker did it again! This cookbook is amazing. Every recipe turns out looking and tasting great. Husband and kid approved. This cookbook although Paleo is really for anyone looking to eat healthy, delicious, and also to cook outside the "box." The Celebrations Cookbook is put together in chapters based on occasions such as; New Years Eve, Easter Brunch, and Halloween, just to name a few. A great addition to your kitchen library!

I was lucky to receive an early copy, so I've been cooking from this book for about 2 weeks, and it's a MUST HAVE. This book is not only for those who have allergies, or follow GF diet, every recipe I have made so far has been delicious, and my family (with 0 diet restrictions) has loved each one so far. My favorite has been the "corn" bread. It's moist, has amazing texture, and I have been repurposing it for other recipes as well. I have already made it 3 times because it's so delicious and easy to make. We've made the blackened salmon with stone fruit salsa, and with chicken, and it was so flavorful. I love how easy the recipes can be for weeknight dinners. As long as you're prepped with the ingredients, actually making most of these recipes have been a breeze. I really can't stress how diverse this book is from desserts, to meat, to sides, and beverages, I love that it has the full range of meals. I think the innovation behind recipes for each Holiday really resonated with me. I found out I have Celiac Disease only three years ago, and have felt very left out at Holidays and have missed the common food at these holidays. But so many classics are now available to me, and not only do they bring back those memories of the original, but I KNOW EXACTLY what I'm eating now. No chemicals and processed cans, just clean, natural foods that I can enjoy with my family! Definitely a must-buy for those with and without allergies in your life! I really think this would be such a cute gift for any Holiday!

Danielle Walker knocks it out of the park with "Celebrations"! Whether you are paleo, gluten-free, clean eating, or simply just want to eat scrumptious homemade food, look no further than this cookbook. This cookbook has grain-free and paleo-approved recipes centered around various holidays throughout the year, but they can be enjoyed at all times of year, including weeknights and non-holidays. Danielle uses clean ingredients in recreating old holiday favorites while creatively coming up with brand new ones. It's always a risk trying a new recipe (let alone a new cookbook), but I was not disappointed in anything I made so far (see attached photos). In fact, my family LOVED everything I made!! They are not gluten-free (only I am) and said they couldn't tell the difference. Each recipe comes with helpful "tidbits" and "make ahead" tricks, which are very helpful. The recipe index in the back of the book is useful for seeing all the recipes broken down by meal type (breakfast, salads, soups, sides, main events, desserts, drinks), which is great when meal planning. There are also special diet tables as well so you can customize the recipes depending on your particular dietary needs. Plus, the book lays flat- no need to find a heavy paperweight!! As a bonus, the photos are simply gorgeous to look at! As for criticisms... many recipes call for a food processor, electric mixer, or blender. As someone who hates cleaning, I often mixed the ingredients by hand with a bowl & wooden spoon, and they came out just fine :) Also, many recipes require special ingredients that aren't easily available in traditional grocery stores (e.g., cacao butter, raw cashew butter, light-colored raw honey). This is a common challenge in paleo cooking and you may have to take a trip to Whole Foods or place an order from Amazon. However, I've subbed other ingredients (e.g., roasted cashew butter, regular honey) and it turned out fine. My favorite recipes: -Carnitas on tostones (pg. 57) -Knife and fork ribs --> That BBQ sauce is worth the price of this book! We use it SO frequently on ribs, chicken, etc. AMAZING!!! (pg. 124) -BLTA (bacon/lettuce/tomato/avocado) burgers with special sauce (pg. 172) -Blackened salmon with stone fruit salsa (pg. 177) -Burger bites (pg. 140) -Roasted garlic caulifower mash (pg. 237) -Mini corn dog muffins (pg. 143) -Mummy dogs (i.e., pigs in a blanket; pg. 214) -Green chile chicken soup --> Hearty enough for a meal (pg. 58) -Curried pumpkin soup (pg. 220) -Tomato watermelon basil salad (pg. 168) -Peach cobber --> SO EASY! (pg. 132) -Whoopie pies (pg. 61) -Pumpkin pie (pg. 256) -Homemade ginger ale (pg. 181) -Lavender lemonade (pg. 105) -My Heart "Beets" For You smoothie (pg. 67) I highly recommend this cookbook!

Wow! This lady just keeps on creating deliciously amazing recipes. I just love the pictures of every single recipe. To me it is very important to see an image of what I am making. So far every recipe I have made I have loved. Game Day Buffet was my family's favorite (chicken wings, sweet and sour meatballs, and cauliflower buffalo bites) but we have also made several times now the skillet "corn" bread (which is extremely versatile as a side dish, breakfast item, dessert, turned into French toast casserole or bread pudding). From the Father's Day menu I have made the Knife and Fork Ribs twice because they are that easy to make and melt in your mouth yummy. My family and friends cant wait for me to make the Christmas Fudge and Peach Cobbler again. I can go on and on but at the end of the day, BUY IT, you wont be disappointed. And if you don't own her other 2 cookbooks those have so much to offer as well.

If you are Paleo by necessity (or have someone in your life who is): this is the book you’ve been waiting for! My Christmas dinner last year was a couple of boiled potatoes and a few slices of the (conventional but at least gluten free) ham my husband made. A few family members (we do Christmas as a pot luck) mentioned afterward that they knew I couldn’t eat what they were bringing, but were stumped for a Paleo option. For as great as the Internet is, it becomes a game of roulette when you’re searching for special occasion recipes – recipes you’re going to make once and don’t necessarily have time to test beforehand. That’s what is great about Danielle Walker’s recipes – they are foolproof. I have been Paleo for almost three years and have made countless recipes from her website and now all three of her cookbooks, and have yet to have a recipe fail me! Every possible event from New Year’s Eve, to a baby shower are covered in Celebrations; big meals (with the recipes scaled appropriately to save you the math) and small plates and seasonal treats are included, with gorgeous photos of every recipe throughout. The recipes I’ve tried so far have all been winners: - Buffalo wings with herb ranch dressing (p. 53) - Chile garlic rapini (p. 80) - Lemon bars (p. 117) – this was one of my favorite desserts as a child and I’m so glad to have it back in my life! - Skillet “corn” bread (p. 131) - Margarita (p. 135) – yes, really! - Mini “corn” dog muffins (p. 143) - Heirloom tomato, watermelon, and basil salad (p. 168) - Special sauce (p. 172) – great on burgers, eggs, pretty much anything! - Blackened salmon (p. 177) – great as chicken, too - Truffled bacon deviled eggs (p. 187) - Butternut sage carbonara (p. 224) - Roasted garlic mashed cauliflower (p. 237) - Pumpkin spice latte (p. 263) – works as a creamer, too! - Blender bread (p. 323) - Whipped coconut cream (p. 331) The only things missing – and this is as someone spoiled by Danielle’s first two cookbooks – are clear cooktimes at the beginning of each recipe and a picture index of the recipes. These formatting preferences aside, Celebrations is the essential special occasion resource for anyone following a Paleo template.

Danielle Walker's Celebrations is one of the most beautiful cookbooks that I have ever seen. Page after page is full of beautiful photos of recipes--recipes that my family can all eat.With food allergies in my family, that can be a challenge, but Danielle Walker makes it look so easy. Celebrations contains "a year of gluten-free, dairy-free, and Paleo recipes for every occasion."The cookbook starts out with a chapter of practical substitutions ad information on the basic ingredients and equipment you will need to make the recipes in the book. Once the basics are done, Walker has chapters on most of the occasions family's celebrate through the year, including, New Year's Eve, Game Day, Valentine's Day, Easter Brunch, Mother's Day and Father's Day, and through the year. She also includes special recipes and ideas for birthday parties and showers. The recipes nearly all look delicious to me. A few of the recipes include: Strawberry Salmon salad with poppy seed dressing, caramel-pecan sticky buns, berry tart with vanilla bean custard, homemade ginger ale, green bean casserole with crispy shallots (this one was worth the whole book for me), and thumbprint cookies. I am anxious to try many in the book. As someone with food allergies at family gatherings, I know it would mean a lot to me if the family would make food we could all eat. This book offers a great variety of recipes that everyone can eat and enjoy written by someone who has to eat a special diet. I highly recommend it.
