Overview

By far the most popular and widely used text for over 50 years, Daniels and Worthingham's Muscle Testing is the original handbook of manual evaluation of muscular strength. In addition to offering tried and true methods for assessing and grading skeletal muscle function, this up-to-date classic provides a comprehensive section on muscle anatomy and innervation that rounds out the testing chapters by linking muscle topography and function. Beautifully illustrated with more than 575 high-quality drawings, the 7th edition includes over 100 new drawings created specifically for this edition.

The book contains both black-and-white and color illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Daniel J. Cipriani, MEd, PT (Medical College of Ohio School of Allied Health)
Description: This is the sixth edition of a well-established textbook on the techniques of manual muscle testing. Two new authors have reorganized the original format, with the welcome addition of information related to the testing of infants, patients with upper motor neuron diseases, and the respiratory muscles.
Purpose: The purpose of this new edition remains consistent with previous editions: to provide occupational and physical therapy professionals with consistent, standardized approaches to manual muscle testing. This includes explanations of specific techniques as well as accepted variations to the assessment of human motor function. A secondary purpose of this new edition is to assist the student reader with anatomy and neuroanatomy review by providing a synopsis of muscle anatomy and muscle innervation.
Audience: Students of physical therapy and occupational therapy will benefit from this textbook. It provides the essential elements relative to entry-level skills in manual muscle testing. Students in physician assistant programs will find this book to be a strong adjunct to patient evaluation curricular materials. Practicing clinicians in these fields may find this new edition to be a welcome reference to their personal library, especially as a review text.
Features: This book is fully illustrated with high quality sketches of each muscle testing procedure. The organization of the text is enhanced through the use of a cross-referencing system providing each muscle with a constant reference number, used throughout the text and in the index. The spiral bound design is helpful to the reader.
Assessment: This sixth edition is highly recommended as a textbook for the student in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and physician assisting. It is economically priced for the student, well organized, and well established as a standard for muscle testing. Also, the addition of "helpful hints" within the text will be very helpful for the developing clinician. Practicing clinicians can benefit as well from the updated techniques and reviews.
