Daniel barely remembers leading a normal life before the Nazis came to power in 1933. He can still picture once being happy and safe, but memories of those days are fading as he and his family face the dangers threatening Jews in Hitler's Germany in the late 1930s. No longer able to practice their religion, vote, own property, or even work, Daniel's family is forced from their home in Frankfurt and sent on a long and dangerous journey, first to the Lodz ghetto in Poland, and then to Auschwitz - the Nazi death camp.
Though many around him lose hope in the face of such terror, Daniel, supported by his courageous family, struggles for survival. He finds hope, life, and even love in the midst of despair.
Although Daniel is a fictitious character, his story was inspired by the real experiences of many of the more than one million children who died in the Holocaust.
Daniel's Story was published in conjunction with an exhibit called "Daniel's Story: Remember the Children" at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
Daniel, whose family suffers as the Nazis rise to power in Germany, describes his imprisonment in a concentration camp and his eventual liberation.

I would recommend this book to middle school because it is a great book to read. It is about how Jews were treated by the germens in world war two. I like this book because it tells you how Jews were treated, killed, and also blamed for Germany’s problems. It tells you how the germens put them in to gas chambers and forced to work in work camps in till they died and were given small rations of food. When they died they were put in to pits of fire and burnt to ash. This book has a lot of historical places in it like Lodz, Auschwitz, Frankfurt, and Benhenwald these are the places Daniel and his family were at during world war two.
Daniel is a ten year old boy that lives in Frankfurt Germany with his family. His is about eighteen when he and his father are freed by the Americans in nineteen forty-five. When the American troops get to Benhenwald they just walk in with no fight because the Jews have taken the camp and locked up the germens and they were forced to witness for the killing of millions of Jews during the war. This is a great book and I know you will like it to.

It is a very good book if you want to know what happen to the Jews during the Nazis period. My daughter who is a 10year read it and like it and asked if we knew anyone who went through it.

I went to Washington D.C. on a class trip. One of the things we did was see the exibit Daniel's Story. It was amazinig to see and read some of his story. If you read the book go see the exibit.

this book is an inspiring story that gives you insight on the holocaust- while also letting you meet the character Daniel. Daniel is amazing. he does amazing things to survive. if you don't know what the holocaust is then i would suggest you research it before reading this book, so you'll understand the concepts better. the ending is hopeful...because after the holocaust no survivor could even find true happiness again. Daniel said in the book 'maybe happiness will come later'. but it never really and truly did. also, one reviewer said that it talks too much about one religion (Jewish). however, you have to understand that the whole Holocaust is based on being prejudice to Jews. i just wanted to clear that up. like i said, this book is hopeful. some parts are bittersweet. some good, some bad. the things the Nazi's do are horrific- but they are true. this book is great and i suggest to anyone old enough, and with enough knowledge to know what the holocaust is really about.

I was very young when I read this book...... I was in the 5th grade and then we went to the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. and it was very sad to walk in the museum because the first thing they give you is a passport!! I do recommend this book I still think its a good book to read about what the kids thought and was going through during the holocaust

I have always loved reading about the Holocaust,so when I found that my LA teacher has a whole shelf of Holocaust books I was thrilled! I had read alot of the books, so I asked my teacher what I should read and she handed me Daniels story. I am almost done with it and cant wait to find out what happens!

This book was so toucthing, thinking about the book just reminds me of the reality of the story rather than it just being a Historical Fiction book.

I have used this book to launch my historical fiction genre for years. We read it as a class and when we get through the first section, I launch self-selected Literature Circles with a variety of other Holocaust novels. The kids just can't get enough. When I ask my students to reflect at the end of the school year, Daniel's Story and our Holocaust study is always at the forefront as to what they feel has changed them the most. I have former students return year after year to borrow Holocaust books they didn't 'get to read' when I had them. What greater validation can a teacher ask for?

Daniel (our protagonist),who is a jew, along with his family, must face the rising Nazi party. This book accuratley depicts the genocide of millions of jews. A must read for anyone who likes studying the halocaust.

This book is currently assigned to all of the students in my grade to read, chapter by chapter. Something amazing has happened. People who don't read have been reading ahead. More than a 1/3 of the grade is done with the book, and we don¿t have to finish reading it for another two weeks. I was amazed. A book so well written and so outstanding everyone enjoys it. This includes parents, teachers, students, anyone. I haven't met a person who doesn't like the book. During passing periods people start talking about it, and we all discuss what has happened and how we feel. Everyone, all groups. Please, if you're reading this go and get this book. It is worth it. Like someone stated in my Language Arts class, ¿Only a fool wouldn¿t like this book.¿

This is a good book but mainly talks about the jews, that I did not like. Liberty Middle suggeted this for 8th grade summer reading. Could be better by selecting a book that not related to any religion..

This is a great book i would recomend to anyone there are many sad events but a very good ending! IT'S A GREAT BOOK! I'd say it is the BEST book i ever read!

It is just amazing how Carol Matas could write such an extrdinary book. It was so heart warming knowing that someone could live through all of that harassment and still live and get married.

This is a book about Daniel a 12 (in the end he is 18) year old boy who leads a perfectly normal life until his world is turned up side down by the nazis. I had to read this book for my English class I thought it was a well told story of the Holocaust. It showed a normal boy who falls in love and at the same time experiences horor that I can't even begin to imagine.

Daniel can hardly remember a normal life once the Nazis have taken over jewish people everywhere prisoner. When I read `Daniel¿s Story¿, by Carol Matas, ($4.99) it took my breath away. 15-year old Daniel has been sent to a concentration camp in Auschwitz, with his father. His sister, Erika , and his mother are both dead and Daniel must struggle to stay alive. Once I started this novel, I simply could not stop. This great book, (ages 10-12) has an exciting plot that will have you going out of your mind with suspense!
